EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore/freshman Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made seven saves for her third shutout of the season as the University of Michigan women's soccer team battled Michigan State to a 0-0 stalemate on Sunday (Oct. 11) in DeMartin Stadium.
Junior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) made several key defensive plays to maintain the shutout and senior Alex Jendrusch (Troy, Mich./Athens) was a headache for MSU all afternoon in the attacking third.
The Wolverines owned a significant possession edge in the first half but could not convert the pressure into chances. Michigan State created the best chance for either side, inside the final 10 minutes of the stanza, on a breakout pass from the wing to a streaking player all alone in the middle. As the Spartan aggressor entered the box, Carron raced across the field, applying a clean slide tackle to preserve the 0-0 score.
Michigan was called upon to make more defensive stops in a second half where they were outshot, 5-2. Kopmeyer had to make her biggest save of the game in the 65th minute. She stymied a Spartan breakaway with a slide tackle and pounced on the loose ball before any damage could be done. Jendrusch got two chances late in the second stanza, just missing a left-footed crossing pass from Carron in the 86th minute and having a blast blocked in the midst of a Michigan onslaught in the fleeting minutes.
MSU nearly ended the game midway through the first overtime with a shot inside the five yard box. A Spartan pass bounced through two U-M defenders creating a point-blank opportunity against Kopmeyer. The U-M goalkeeper charged, sliding feet first into the attacker and popped the ball in the air where Carron was there to kick it away.
Kopmeyer again answered the bell in the second overtime when MSU's Laura Heyboer received a crossing pass on the far post with 3:30 remaining. Heyboer did not get all of the ball on her attempt at the net as Kopmeyer came scampering across to make the stop on the bouncing ball. Michigan came storming down the field for one last charge, but time ran out before it could take a final crack at the cage.
Michigan continues with its Big Ten slate on Thursday (Oct. 15) when it takes on Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The Wolverines will then return home to face Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 18) for a nationally televised contest on the Big Ten Network.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the game ... "Overall, we did a great job defending Michigan State who has two of the best goal scorers in the conference in Lauren Hill and Laura Heyboer. I thought the back four was very organized and Haley Kopmeyer had a very good second half. She came out and took care of a lot of crosses and a couple of breakaways and made some good saves. That kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win, but I think on the day we didn't show the kind of attacking initiative to create goals. We talked about it as a team and that is what we will work on this week in training."
On the play of Alex Jendrusch ... "Alex bowled a 300. It was one of the best performances I have seen since I got to Michigan. She played simple, she defended well, her positioning was fantastic, she got forward, she got crosses in and she ran until she couldn't run anymore. I think we all could take a lesson from watching Alex play."
