BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished the first of two days at the Indiana Invitational in third place with 579 points on Friday night (Jan. 9) at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. No. 13 Tennessee finished the day in first with 1023.5 points.
Junior Margaret Kelly(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and senior Hannah Smith(Dexter, Mich./Dexter) each earned wins for the Wolverines on the first day of competition.
U-M started the morning session with a second-place finish in the 4x200-yard freestyle relay. The Wolverines were the top seed heading into the race but touched the wall .70 behind the Volunteers.
In the third event of the day, Kelly and Smith finished 1-2 for the Wolverines in the 200-yard individual medley. Kelly touched the wall first with a time of 2:01.18 for her team-leading ninth win of the season. Smith followed Kelly with a career-best time of 2:02.63 to finish in second.
Kelly followed up her first-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in with a season-best time of 23.32, .40 behind Tennessee's Michelle King.
In the second session, senior Payton Johnson(Champaign, Ill./Centennial) picked up a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, outracing the Hoosiers' Kate Zubkova for second as she finished the final 25 yards .20 quicker than the 2008 Olympian.
Smith gave U-M two straight top-three finishes when she tied Tennessee's Carly Mathes for first place in the 200-yard freestyle. Smith and Mathes battled back and forth throughout the race but neither was able to open up a substantial lead as the two touched the wall at the same time (1:49.81).
Smith added her third top-three finish of the day when she placed third in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing almost two seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher from Tennessee.
The Wolverines then ended the day with a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Smith gave Michigan an early lead after the first 200 yards, but the relay squads from both Tennessee and Indiana managed to pull ahead over the final 600 yards.

Michigan Assistant Coach Stefanie Kerska
On the first day... "The girls are coming off an intense training trip and a new dry-land routine that has left them a little drained. But I think we got better in the second session. We are using everything as a learning experience to be a little more thorough in our preparation and to be a little more focused to make sure we are getting the details right."
U-M Senior Hannah Smith
On the girls' performance... "It was a hard day. We just got back from our training trip and we are all kind of sore and tired. But I think everyone swam tough, gave it their all and they left everything they had in the pool. I know some people are disappointed by their times, but we aren't worried about times right now so much as race strategy as we get prepared for Big Tens. Overall, I think we all swam very tough today."
