YPSILANTI, Mich. C The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell in its home-opening contest by a 3-2 margin to Dayton on Friday evening (Sept. 5) at Scicluna Field. The Wolverines made an ill-fated second-half comeback, coming inches from tying the game in the 90th minute but had to settle for the loss.
Senior Danelle Underwood(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and sophomore Amanda Bowery(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) both had a goal and an assist on the night. Senior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was busy in net, making six stops.
In a tale of two halves, the Wolverines held the play for much of the second stanza. Trailing 2-0 after the break, U-M connected on its second chance of the period at 48:08 to pull within one goal. Michigan aggressively attacked the box, putting two players in tight on the Dayton keeper. Freshman Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) carried the ball into the box on the left side and let a shot go toward the middle of the net. The strike pin-balled to Underwood via Bowery and Underwood slammed the ball into the back of the net.
Dayton answered six minutes later to extend its lead to 3-1 on a long shot that found the inside of the far bar. The Wolverines continually shuffled their lineup, attempting to keep fresh legs on the field and the tactic paid off at 75:13 thanks to a corner-kick goal off the head of Bowery. U-M's set play had Bowery move from the middle of the crease toward the near bar where she got above the crowd and directed the Underwood serve into the goal.
One minute after pulling the Maize and Blue to within one of the Flyers, Bowery found herself 30 yards from an empty net. Coming down the middle, Bowery beat the Dayton goalkeeper to a free ball. She steered the ball to safety before sending a slow shot that skipped just wide of the yawning cage. Michigan had one last chance on a corner kick in the 90th minute, but could not direct the serve on net.
Dayton used a pair of long shots to generate to its 2-0 lead in the opening stanza. Caitlin Proffitt scored from 15 yards out at 23:21 and Stephanie Wurth netted one from 30 yards out at 39:57.
The Wolverines will host Western Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 1 p.m. on Eastern Michigan's Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the strong second half... "The kids showed tremendous heart to come back from two down and make a game of it. We could have very easily tied the game, we missed an open goal and a couple headers, so I'm really proud for the way they fought back."
On the key to the second-half offense... "You look at the second half and it's the first time we really came out and attacked a team with more players in the attack and that was good to see Claire (Stachel), (Danelle Underwood), Natalie (Horner) and Amanda (Bowery) all getting chance so we need to keep working on our attacking."
On what he wants his team to walk away with from the game... "We are a young team, there's a lot of things we need to learn on both sides of the ball but the positives we will take out of today is we attacked better and we will build off of that."
U-M Senior Danelle Underwood
On her goal... "The first half our offense was non-existent, but in the second half we changed our formation and we committed to pushing up as a group and being offensive and I think we did that. Claire (Stachel) made a beautiful run, beat a few players and then crossed it right in front of the goal which made it real easy on me. I am really proud of the team and I think we will have good things in our future."
