Michigan Selects Four Senior Captains for 2009 Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan water polo head coach Matt Anderson announced today (Friday, Sept. 26) that seniors Mary Chatigny(Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs), Carrie Frost(Saline, Mich./Saline), Kelsey Haley(Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo) and Julie Hyrne(Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) will serve as captains for the 2009 campaign. Frost joins the three returning captains from a year ago.
"This is as strong of a class of captains as we have ever had here at Michigan," Anderson said. "The work that Julie, Mary and Kelsey did last year was invaluable, and the addition of Carrie is just going to make it that much better. I am looking forward to another tremendous year of leadership in and out of the water."
Chatigny earned second team all-tournament honors at the CWPA Eastern Championship last year as a junior. During the 2008 season, she came up one goal shy of her career high with 33 markers and moved into seventh on U-M's all-time points list with 177 during her career.
Frost closed out 2008 with a bang, picking up five points and a CWPA Player of the Week laurel at the NCAA Championship. Frost, who is enrolled in the Ross School of Business, has amassed 124 steals -- sixth-most by any Wolverine -- and 166 points in her career. Her leadership qualities were recognized during her freshman season when she was tabbed as the U-M water polo Big Ten Sportsmanship award honoree.
In 2008, Haley set career highs in points (35), goals (11) and steals (40) despite missing seven games in the middle of the season. An American culture and women's studies major, Haley was tabbed with a U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award last year and earned the 2007 Big Ten Sportsmanship award.
An AWPCA All-American, Hyrne is the program's second-leading scorer and has earned back-to-back division most valuable player nods as well as the 2008 CWPA Eastern Championship MVP award. Hyrne, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient, led Michigan with 66 goals and 97 points during the 2008 campaign.
Only two players before Chatigny, Haley and Hyrne have served as captains for Michigan for more than one season. Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) served during her last two seasons, and Delia Sonda (2001-03), one of the program's inaugural captains, was designated in all three seasons she wore the maize and blue.
The Wolverines will seek their eighth straight CWPA division crown in 2009. The 2008 Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Championship while setting a program record with 34 wins and breaking the 500-goal plateau for the first time in a season.
