O'Lionaird Named Big Ten Runner of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior/sophomore Ciaran O'Lionaird(Cork, Ireland/De La Salle) of the University of Michigan men's cross country team was named Big Ten Conference Runner of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 16) following his win in the 8,000-meter Spartan Invitational this past Friday (Sept.12) at Michigan State University's Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The award is his first career weekly conference honor.
O'Lionaird has finished in the top three in both of the Wolverines' two races this season. The Cork, Ireland, native finished in 24:44 and was the first of four straight U-M runners to cross the finish line in East Lansing.
This is the second time in the young 2008 season that a U-M runner has earned Big Ten Runner of the Week honors. Senior Lex Williams(Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) earned the honor on Sept. 2.
The Maize and Blue will return to regular-season action this Saturday (Sept. 20) when it heads to New York City, N.Y., to run in the Br. Doyle Meet of Champions. The 8,000-meter scored event will be run at historic Van Cortlandt Park and is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.
