
Ofili Named Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior co-captain Tiffany Ofili(Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team was named the Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year for the 2008 outdoor season, announced Monday (June 9) by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Ofili, the reigning NCAA indoor and outdoor hurdles champion, finished second at the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Mideast Regional Championships in the 100-meter hurdles during the 2008 outdoor season. She also finished third in the long jump and fourth in the 100-meter dash at the Big Ten meet. Ofili is seeded fifth in the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a season best of 12.83 seconds.
During the indoor season, Ofili captured the 60-meter hurdles title at the NCAA Indoor Championships and won the 60-meter hurdles as well as the long jump at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on the way to being named the Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of Year. The junior co-captain owns the U-M records in the 60-meter hurdles (7.94) and the 100-meter hurdles (12.80).
Ofili's award gives the Wolverines a sweep of the Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year awards for 2008. During the indoor season, senior co-captain Nicole Edwards(Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) was named the top track athlete and associate head coach Mike McGuire was voted Assistant Coach of the Year.
Ofili will look to defend her 100-meter hurdles national championship this week at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She will be joined by seven U-M teammates at the meet, which runs Wednesday through Saturday (June 11-14) at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
