
Giampaolo, Findlay Named to Academic All-District Teams

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Alessandra Giampaolo(Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic HS) and sophomore Angela Findlay(Lockport, Ill./East HS) of the University of Michigan softball team have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 4 softball teams, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Giampaolo was named to the Academic All-District first team, adding to her 2006 second-team distinction, in recognition of her work in the classroom and solid play on the field. She moves on to the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration. Findlay was voted to the Academic All-District third team.
A psychology major who graduated from U-M in April, Giampaolo is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and garnered U-M Athletic Academic Achievement honors in each of her collegiate seasons.
A Great Lakes All-Region and All-Big Ten first team pick, Giampaolo has started all 57 games in the outfield for the Wolverines and ranks among the Wolverines' hitting leaders with a .364 average and a team-best 12 doubles and 18 multi-hit games while posting a .433 on-base percentage. Michigan's leadoff hitter for much of the season, she also leads the team in hits (67).
Findlay has listed among the Wolverines' leaders in the classroom in each of her two seasons, earning the team's Leo and Edna Drewett Award for Academic Excellence this season. She earned 2008 Academic All-Big Ten honors and has twice received U-M Athletic Academic Achievement accolades.
A unanimous All-Big Ten first team selection and All-Great Lakes Region second team pick, Findlay has flourished in the second half of Michigan's schedule, improving her season batting average by 123 points over the last 28 games. She ranks among the Wolverines' leading hitters with a .337 batting average, 39 runs scored and 24 RBI.
The Wolverines (51-6) will host Virginia Tech in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional on Saturday and Sunday (May 24-25). The teams will play at noon Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, with the third game to follow Sunday if necessary. All three games will be televised by ESPN (Saturday's will be a regional telecast) and carried on ESPN360.com.
