COLUMBIA, Mo.--As the skies opened up with heavy rains during the first half of the final round, the University of Michigan men's golf team had its playing rhythm drenched and altered as the Wolverines posted a final round 307 Tuesday (April 8) to close seventh with an 899 54-hole total at the UMB Bank-Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate at the Club at Old Hawthorne.
After opening the tournament with a 299 first round total in colder than usual weather conditions, the sun came out in the second round and the Wolverines responded as they tallied a 293 second round team total to sit tied for sixth after 36 holes. With poor weather conditions in the forecast almost canceling the final round, the 11-team field met rain throughout the first nine holes of the final round before it stopped allowing play to continue. With the condition and delays, the Wolverines closed with a 307 final round to drop out of the tie and close with a seventh-place showing.
Junior Bill Rankin(Traverse City, Mich./Central) led the U-M individual charge as he tied for 15th, posting his third top 20 finish of the season with a 224 total. After opening with a two-over 74, he closed with back-to-back three-over 75s. In addition, sophomore David Weisfeld(Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale HS) played in just his second collegiate event and as an individual, tied for 15th with a 224 total. He opened with a three-over 75 before tying his career-best with an even par 72 in the second round. Weisfeld closed with a 77 in the final round for his 224 total.
Senior co-captain Tim Schaetzel(Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and freshman Lion Kim(Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep) closed behind Rankin with 226 totals, tying them both for 21st. Schaetzel sandwiched rounds of 77 around an even-par 72, while Kim opened with a two-over 74, followed with a one-over 73 before closing with a 79 in the rainy conditions. Other Wolverines finishes included: junior Nick Pumford(St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles), tied for 25th with a 227 total (74-73-80) and senior Brian Ottenweller(Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS), tied for 44th with a 233 total (79-78-76).
Indiana (294-286-301) was able to hold on to its first day lead to win the overall team title with an 881 total. Kansas State (298-293-295) closed just five strokes behind with an 886 total, while Arkansas (291-293-304) was third at 888. Individual, the Hoosiers made it two wins as Jorge Campillo took medalist honors with a four-under 212 total (72-66-74). Michigan State's Randy Hutchinson (72-71-72) was the runner-up at 215, while Kansas State's Mitchell Gregson was third at 217 (71-74-72).
The Wolverines will have one day of prep before heading to Columbus, Ohio, Saturday and Sunday (April 12-13) to play in Ohio State's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament will be played at OSU's Scarlet Course.

Michigan Head Coach Andrew Sapp
On the third round weather difficulties causing problems with U-M's finish ... "In the third round, across the board, we played pretty poorly. We started off and played the first six holes in a down poor. A lot of guys played well when it was raining and when it stopped raining we started to play poorly. It is hard to explain. We just had a bad finish. We had a good opportunity today and we were eager to get out and play this round, even though they thought last night that they were going to cancel it before we even started. I'm glad we got to play, because we were hoping to pass some of the teams in front of us. We obviously didn't do that. It leaves a sour taste in your mouth. You have to spit that out and get ready for this weekend.
On the play of Bill Rankin and David Weisfeld ... "Both of them played solid and didn't shoot anything terrible. It was good to see. It was good to see David (Weisfeld)play well. It was good experience for him. Bill (Rankin)played solid and led the way for our team today. Although he shot 75, which he wasn't extremely pleased with, it wasn't a terrible score when you think about the conditions."
