Michigan Duo Shares CWPA Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Sophomore Leah Robertson(Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and freshman Alison Mantel(Miami, Fla./Gulliver) of the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan water polo team were named CWPA Western Division co-Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday (April 29). The duo was strong in both ends of the pool, helping the Wolverines clinched the Eastern Championship (April 25-27).
Robertson became the program's all-time leader in career steals over the weekend, boasting 214 thefts. Her seven steals against No. 20 Princeton (April 26) tied for the third highest single-game total by a Wolverine. She also hit the back of the cage twice and had an assist against the Tigers. In championship contest, Robertson had five steals to go with three points. Her play earned a spot on the Eastern All-Tournament first team.
Mantel quietly posted five points and five steals in her first Eastern Championship. She had single markers in the opening two rounds before dialing it up with a pair of goals, including a five meter penalty shot, against No. 14 Hartwick in the finals. Mantel had two key steals against the Hawks and Tigers to help secure victory.
Both players take home their second weekly accolade of the year. Robertson was tabbed for the Feb. 26 award, a little over a year after receiving the first of her career (Feb. 12, 2007). Mantel got her first weekly nod on Feb. 11.
The No.6 seedWolverines will lock up with No. 3 seed Southern Cal in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Championships in Palo Alto, Calif.at 3:15 p.m. PDT on Friday, May 9.
