BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Juniors Sharayah Hernandez(Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) and Julie Hyrne(Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) of the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan water polo team were named CWPA Western Division co-Players of the Week, the league announced Monday (April 21). Hernandez and Hyrne each played pivotal roles in Michigan's seventh straight divisional crown at the Western Division Championship (April 18-19).
Hernandez sparked the Wolverines 11-goal outburst against No. 18 Indiana in the division finals, scoring twice in the first 1:18. Her markers gave Michigan a boost out of the gate that propelled the team to its fifth division title. Hernandez also scored against Gannon in the semi-finals and had five assists in the weekend.
Hyrne also hit the back of the cage twice against the Hoosiers as part of a seven goal weekend. In the victory over Gannon, Hyrne deposited all four attempts in the net and had an assist. In addition to a goal on her lone shot against Penn State-Behrend, Hyrne had a theft in each contest at the Western Division Championships.
This is Hernandez's second accolade in as many weeks. She is currently fourth on the team in scoring with 60 points and shares second place in assists with 30 helpers. Hyrne wrapped up her third weekly laurel of the season and the fifth of her career. U-M's leading scorer with 59 markers, Hernandez has the fifth highest single-season goal total in program history.
Michigan will take on Mercyhurst on Friday (April 25) as Canham Natatorium plays host to the Eastern Championship Friday through Sunday (April 25-27). On the line this weekend is the CWPA automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held at Stanford from May 9-11.
