COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan water polo team broke a fourth quarter tie to defeat Bucknell, 7-6, on day two of the Terrapin Tournament at the Eppley Recreation Center on Sunday (April 13). Freshman Lauren Orth(Poway, Calif./Poway) scored on a five-meter penalty to deliver the lead that would add to U-M's program-record 21 game winning streak.
Junior Julie Hyrne(Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) turned in her team leading sixth hat trick of the season and junior goalkeeper Brittany May(Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) made five blocks in the contest.
With the two teams tied late in the fourth frame, sophomore Leah Robertson(Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) drew a penalty shot with 2:07 remaining to set up the winning goal. Michigan turned to Orth who dented the twine to give U-M a 7-6 advantage. The Bison drew a power play with 47 seconds remaining in the game, but the Wolverine defense buckled down and didn't allow a shot to hold on for the win.
Michigan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening stanza on Hyrne's first marker of the contest. May stifled a Bucknell penalty shot that would have tied the game and allowed the Wolverines to go up 2-0 on a counter-attack goal from freshman Keller Felt(La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla). Junior Mary Chatigny(Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) extended the U-M lead in the second period, scoring at less than two-and-half minutes into the frame. Bucknell got on the board with a pair of scores to pull within one goal of the Wolverines. Freshman Cara Reitz(Miami, Fla./Gulliver) created some distance heading into the break, stealing the ball off the hand of a Bison attacker and swimming the length of the pool for the goal.
Bucknell was quick out of the gate in the third period, scoring to inch back to inside striking distance. Hyrne struck again on a 6-on-5 opportunity, taking a pass from Mantel and freshman Alison Mantel(Miami, Fla./Gulliver) and pegging the ball into the cage. Bucknell converted on two powerplay chances in the final two minutes of the quarter, knotting the game at 5-5 heading into the final period.
The Wolverines carry the top-seed in the CWPA Western Division into the postseason, drawing eighth-seeded Penn State-Behrend in the opener. The two teams will square off at 5:15 p.m. in Grove City, Pa. on Friday (April 18). Michigan has won six-straight divisional titles and is the only Western Division champion since its inception in 2004.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the team's play ... "I explained to the girls that we had to get back to defense. Last night we got a little bit out of control on defense and were just worrying about scoring. Today we clamped down defensively. That was the difference today, we decided to play defense. I was also very happy to see the veteran players work with the younger players to get a victory."
On setting the tone heading into the postseason ... "It is important for us as a team to play well in our last game heading into our divisional (playoffs) and we did that offensively and defensively."
