ANN ARBOR , Mich. -- Despite event titles from junior/sophomore Phil Goldberg(Ringgold, Ga./McCallie) on rings (15.400) and sophomore David Chan(Singapore/Hale School) on vault (16.000), the No. 6 University of Michigan Men's Gymnastics team fell to the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal, 361.150-361.300, Sunday (March 2) in Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan began the meet on the floor and took a solid lead after the first rotation, 60.400-58.000. Junior Ralph Rosso(Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianny), the first Wolverine to compete, earned the highest score on the event with a 15.150.
During the second rotation, Stanford crept up on U-M, excelling in the floor exercise. David Chan's 15.100 on vault highlighted the action for Michigan. At the end of the second rotation, Stanford held the advantage 119.300-119.200.
On the rings, junior Joe Catrambone(Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) electrified the crowd and his teammates with a 14.950. Goldberg topped his fellow Wolverine with a 15.400 and the rings title. However, the Cardinal took an even larger lead at the end of the third rotation, 182.300-179.850.
The Wolverines fought back on the vault -- each gymnast earned no lower than a 15.000. Chan nearly matched his season high, scoring a 16.000 for the vault title of the afternoon. Going into the fifth rotation, U-M regained the lead 243.150-242.550.
Saving the best for last, freshman Chris Cameron(Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) earned the best Michigan score on parallel bars with a 15.400. At the end of the fifth rotation, U-M held a slight edge 302.250-301.950.
In the final rotation, Catrambone, the No. 1-ranked high bar performer in the country, backed up his ranking with his 15.300 performance on the high bar. The score was the highest of the night the Wolverines and the second highest total for the meet. Despite Catrambone's heroics, U-M came up short against the top-ranked Cardinal, 361.150-361.300.
The Wolverines will compete Saturday (March 8) against Illinois in Huff Hall. Action will begin at 7 p.m. CST.
