
Chan and Kelley Win Event Titles in Loss at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN , Ill. -- Sophomore David Chan(Singapore/Hale School) won his third vault title of the season and freshman Thomas Kelley(Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) secured his first career high bar title, but it was not enough as the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team fell to No. 6-ranked Illinois, 357.150-353.200, Saturday (March 8) in Huff Hall.
Chan -- one of the last athletes to compete in the vault -- tied his season-high score of 16.150 to claim the title in the event. The next closest score to Chan was a 15.800 by Illinois' Paul Ruggeri. The performance helped push U-M closer to the Illini with a score of 240.250-238.400 at the end of the fourth rotation.
During U-M's final event, the high bar, Kelley gave his best effort of the night to earn the event title with a 15.000. However, the Illini earned the next four highest scores and the Maize and Blue was unable to complete the victory.
The Wolverines fell behind after the first rotation on pommel horse, but Michigan took the second and third place spots in the event. Freshman Chris Cameron(Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) came in second with a 14.850 and David Chan and sophomore Mel Santander(Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) tied for third (14.800).
On the floor exercise, Cameron again earned U-M's highest score but the Illini took the top five marks on the event. After the second rotation, Michigan trailed Illinois 116.700-118.050.
During the third rotation, Michigan was unable to keep pace with the home team, as the Illini swept the top three spots in the still rings. Juniors Joe Catrambone(Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) and Ralph Rosso(Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) had the best Michigan showing with a fifth place tie (14.650). After the third rotation, the Wolverines trailed Illinois 175.850-178.20.
On the parallel bars, the Illini widened their lead again by a score of 298.850-296.250. Santander came in fourth with Michigan's highest score in the event of a 14.750.
Michigan will be back in action Saturday (March 22) against Ohio State at Cliff Keen Arena. Action begins at 7 p.m.
