
Lee Clinches Spot at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Elyse Lee(Albion, Mich./Albion) of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championship meet (March 8-10) with a third-place finish in the three-meter diving final at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships (March 14-16) in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Lee's total of 601.65 punched a ticket to her third NCAA-meet in as many years. This is Lee's first year qualifying off the three-meter springboard after using a pair of top finishes in one-meter diving to earn her spot the last two seasons.
In Friday's competition (March 2), Lee placed fourth in one-meter diving to lead the Wolverines with 578.90 showing. Senior Katie Skendrovic(Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake), wasn't far behind, scoring a 549.80 for fifth place. Sophomore Stephanie O'Callaghan(Howell, Mich./Howell) finished 14th (480.55), followed by freshman Jillian Drow(Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) in 26th (219.45) and senior Erica LaBont(Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) who placed 30th on a score of 212.55.
The Wolverines got their NCAA bid from Lee in the three-meter event on Saturday. Lee finished third with a score of 601.65 points. Skendrovic came in 13th place (528.85) while Drow (213.65) and O'Callaghan (210.55) finished 31st and 32nd, respectively. Sophomore Caitlin Dunphy-Daly(Royal Oak, Mich./Rochester)Stephanie O'Callaghan(Howell, Mich./Howell) rounded out the Wolverine competitors with a score of 201.45 for 35th position.
On the final day of competition Skendrovic was tops amongst Wolverines, finishing in fifth place on the strength of 500.95 points. O'Callghan slotted in two places behind Skendrovic with 431.35 points. Drow finished in tenth place with 392.25 and Dunphy-Daly posted a score of 369.35 for a 13th place finish.
Lee will join U-M's eight swimming qualifiers at next week's NCAA Championships, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday (March 20-22), at Ohio State's University McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion in Columbus.
