ANN ARBOR , Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team completed its weekend sweep of the Lake Superior State Lakers with a 4-2 home win on Saturday night (Feb. 16), extending U-M's unbeaten streak to seven games (3-0-4). The Wolverine offense was led by Louie Caporusso(Woodbridge, Ontario), who garnered two goals in the contest for his first career multi-goal game. Making his fourth start of the season, Bryan Hogan(Highland, Mich.) made 21 saves.
Travis Turnbull(Chesterfield, Mo.) had an empty-net goal and assist on the evening as well, while Matt Rust(Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) chipped in the other U-M tally.
After a lackluster start, Michigan scored back-to-back goals toward the end of the first period -- a mere 41 seconds apart -- to put itself ahead 2-0.
Caporusso took advantage of a U-M power-play, scoring an unassisted marker at 14:44. The freshman won a faceoff in the neutral zone and carried the puck down the right side of the ice. He skated toward the far post and popped the puck over the outstretched leg of LSSU goaltender Pat Inglis. The tally put the Maize and Blue on top 1-0.
Then at 15:25, Rust put U-M up 2-0, with helpers from Aaron Palushaj(Northville, Mich.) and Chris Summers(Milan, Mich.). Rust received the puck from Palushaj in the neutral zone and carried it down the right side. Rust's shot went directly through the legs of Inglis and capped off the scoring of the opening frame.
Lake Superior cut its deficit in half to 2-1 in the middle stanza, scoring a power-play goal at 10:05. Skating through the left circle, Zac MacVoy crossed the puck to the right side, where Dan Eves put it past Hogan from the right post.
Michigan retaliated at 19:36 to make the score 3-1 with another tally from Caporusso. Scooter Vaughn(Placentia, Calif.), skating just inside the blue line, sent the puck deep to the backboards, and it took a lucky bounce to Turnbull near the right side of the goal. Caporusso beat his defenseman to collect Turnbull's pass in stride, and the rookie scored his second goal of the evening.
The Lakers put another mark on the board at 14:23 in the final frame, making the score 3-2. Rick Schofield stood at the high slot and one-timed it past Hogan into the top corner of the net. Helpers were credited to LSSU's Steven Kaunisto and Dan Eves.
Turnbull solidified Michigan's triumph at 19:45 with an empty-net goal to make it 4-2. Ben Winnett(New Westminster, B.C.) crossed the puck to Turnbull near the blue line, and the junior took an off-balance shot that slid slowly across the ice into the unprotected goal. Hogan also picked up an assist when he played the puck around the boards to Winnett to start the breakout.
The Wolverines will travel to East Lansing, Mich., Friday (Feb. 22) to take on the Michigan State Spartans in Munn Ice Arena. The in-state rivalry is scheduled to begin at 8:05 p.m. and will be broadcast by CSTV. The following night (Feb. 23), both teams will head to Detroit to play at Joe Louis Arena. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. and television coverage will be provided by FSN Detroit.
