The University of Michigan women's soccer team (3-6-4, 0-2-2 Big Ten) will take to the pitch at the new U-M Soccer Complex, hosting a pair of games on the west practice field. The Wolverines welcome No. 25 Penn State on Friday (Oct. 10) for a 4 p.m. contestin thefirst game at the new three-field complex. On Sunday (Oct. 12), the Maize and Blue will play Ohio State at noon as part of a doubleheader with the men's team, which plays Western Michigan at 2 p.m. In addition to commemorating the inauguration of the complex Friday, the Wolverines will also celebrate the senior class before the game on Sunday. The 2008 class features Skylar Andrews(Dallas, Texas/Plano West Senior),Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker),Katie Miler (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne),Kristin Thomas(Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) andDanelle Underwood(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern).

Families will have the opportunity to compete in Family Relays at halftime as well as enjoy fun inflatables and delicious sno-cones throughout the game. Families will also have the opportunity to receive autographs from select members of the team after the game.

WOLVERINE BITES
Fresh Dirt -- The Wolverines will open their fourth home field on Friday (Oct. 10). Michigan is 1-0-2 in the inaugural game at a new home. Mitchell Field played host to the program's firsthome game on Sept. 3, 1994, when the Wolverines tied Wisconsin-Green Bay, 1-1. Two days later, they opened Elbel Field -- which was their primary home the remainder of the 1994 campaign -- with a 3-1 victory over Northern Illinois. The Maize and Blue opened the last place it called home, the U-M Soccer Field, with a 1-1 tie against Buffalo on Sept. 17, 1995.
Television Star -- The Big Ten Network will broadcast U-M's upcoming game at Northwestern on Oct. 19. The game, slated for 1 p.m. CDT, will air on a two-hour tape delay beginning at 4 p.m. EDT. Michigan was on television three times last season, giving the viewers 110 minutes of action in each game. Michiganbattled Northwestern and Notre Dame to scoreless ties and Indiana to a 1-1 deadlockunder the lights of the silver screen.
Freshman Phenomenal -- The Michigan freshman classhas had ahand in 12 of the 16 U-M scores this season. Freshmen Kristen Goncalves(Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard Catholic), Natalie Horner(Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Kelsey Rogind(Emerald Hills, Calif./St. Francis), Kim Siebert(Troy, Mich./Avondale) and Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) have combined for seven goals and eight assists. All of the class' field players have appeared in at least 12 games, helping them to live up to the billing as the Big Ten's top freshman class according to Soccer Buzz Magazine.
GETTING SOME NEW DIGS
The Wolverines will move into the U-M Soccer Complex this weekend (Oct. 10-12). The brand new home of Michigan soccer will feature a regulation, lighted competition field and separate practice fields for both the men's and women's programs. The fields are located west of the tennis complex on South State Street.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Penn State -- No. 25 Penn State (8-5-0 overall, 3-0-0 Big Ten)has allowed just onegoal in three Big Ten contests, shutting out Northwestern and Indiana while holding Wisconsin to one marker. The Nittany Lions offense is led by the two-headed attack of sophomore forward Danielle Toney and junior forward Katie Schoepfer. Each has a team-leading six goals withToney also leading the team in assists (6) and points (18). PSU defeated Michigan, 2-0, on the way toa 2007 regular-season Big Ten title. The Wolverinestrail theall-time series 4-13-4. The Wolverines advanced past the Nittany Lions in a shootout in the 2005 Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor. The Maize and Blue sent home a then-undefeated PSU squad en route toa conference runner-up finish.
Ohio State -- The Buckeyes (6-4-2 overall, 3-0-0 Big Ten) have been a tale of two teams, going without a victory in their first six contest before rattling off six straightwins --a streak that is aliveheading into this weekend. The Buckeyes are led by senior midfielder Lisa Collison who has a team leading six goals and 14 points. Ohio State is currently tied for the top offense in Big Ten play with six goals in three games. Freshman forward Paige Maxwellwill be defending herBig Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week laurel when the Buckeyes venture to Ann Arbor. Michigan will look to avenge a 1-0 loss in 2007 which dropped its overall record against OSU to 11-6-2.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
Michigan got strong defense, but could not get the offense revved up in a pair of Big Ten contests. Senior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) recorded nine saves to backstop a 1-1 tie at Purdue on Friday (Oct. 3). Sophomore Jackie Carron(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) scored her first career goal late in the game. On Sunday (Oct. 5), the defense held No. 25 Illinois to three shots as U-M battled hard but fell 1-0 to the Illini.
