SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team completed playat the three-day San Diego State Fall Classicon Sunday (Oct. 5) at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Wolverines competed against players from Arizona, San Diego and host San Diego State, going a combined 21-6 over the weekend.
U-M opened the event strong, picking up five singles wins and going 3-0 in doubles action on Friday. Highlighting the day was the collegiate debut of freshman Michelle Sulahian(Glen Valley, Calif./Campbell Hall School), who posted a 6-4, 6-2 singles win and teamed withsophomore Rika Tatsuno(Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) for an 8-6 doubles victory.
On Saturday, senior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) picked up her second consecutive singles victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win overSan Diego State's Olivia Colman. Howard concluded the weekend with a perfect 3-0 singles record and earned a 2-1 doubles record with sophomore Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS).
Michigan wrapped up the weekend with four singles wins and two doublesvictories today. Sophomore Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) and juniorTaniaMahtani(Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS)picked up their third consecutive doubles win with an 8-2 triumph over San Diego's Juliette Coupez and Samantha Mouly.
Sulahian joined Howard with a 3-0 singles record to lead the way for the Wolverines, while Mahtani, Tatsuno and sophomore Kari Wig(Cochrane, Alberta/Cochrane HS) each picked up two wins over the weekend. Mahtani and Taney also teamed together to go 3-0 in doubles, as did Sulahian and Tatsuno.
The Wolverines will now switch focus to the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, to be held Oct. 23-28 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facilityin East Lansing, Mich.
