EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore Kari Wig(Cochrane, Alberta/Cochrane HS) and freshman Michelle Sulahian(Valley Glen, Calif/Campbell HS) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team opened singles-qualifying action Thursday (Oct. 23) at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at theMSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Sulahian won twice to advance to Friday's (Oct. 24) third round, while Wig bowed out in the second round.
Sulahian picked up an opening-round victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Indiana State's Valeriia Petrovych. She then advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Marquette's Paola Calderon. Sulahian will take on Iowa's Jessica Young for one of eight spots in the singles main draw.
Wig also competed in singles qualifying, opening with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Western Illinois' Amanda Griffin in the first round before falling 6-1, 7-6(5) to Purdue's Tatiana Ganzha.
Main-draw doubles action begins on Friday, and the Wolverines will field four doubles teams. Junior Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) and sophomore Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) will team, as will sophomore Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai. E, Stevenson HS) and senior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy). Sophomore Rika Tatsuno(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) will pair with Sulahian, while senior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) will play with Wig.
Action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Friday with the qualifying-singles competition, while main-draw doubles action will begin at approximately at2 p.m. Mahtani, Sugiyama, Muresan, Howard and Tatsuno will open main-draw singles action on Saturday (Oct. 25).
