EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team had two doubles teams advance to the third round today (Friday, Oct. 24) at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at MSU's Indoor Tennis Facility. The team of sophomore Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) and senior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) and the team of junior Tania Mahtani(Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) and sophomore Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) will each play tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 25) for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Muresan and Sugiyama picked up an 8-3 win over Minnesota's Karina Chiarelli and Niltooli Wilkins in the opening round and moved into the third round with an 8-4 win over Northwestern's Samantha Murray and Elena Chernyakova in the second round. The duo will take on Ohio State's Cami Hubbs and Kristina Keesey on Saturday for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Mahtani and Taney teamed to defeat Kersten Pahl and Yumi Matsuto from Western Michigan, 8-6, and Northwestern's Nazlie Ghanzal and Stacey Lee, 8-6, to move into the third round.
Senior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) and sophomore Kari Wig(Cochrane, Alberta/Cochrane HS) reached the second round of doubles with an 8-4 win over Wisconsin's Ekaterina Mimova and Angela Chupa in the first round but were eliminated after falling to Notre Dame's Kali Krisik and Shannon Matthews, 8-5, in the second. Sophomore Rika Tatsuno(Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) and freshman Michelle Sulahian(Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell HS) also competed in doubles action, falling to Paloma Escobedo and Angela Dispastina from Ohio State, 8-5, in the first round.
Sulahian, who won two matches on Thursday (Oct. 23) to advance to the qualifying-singles third round, dropped her third-round match to Iowa's Jessica Young, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2. Sulahian, who was undefeated coming into the weekend, moves to 5-1 on the season.
In addition to third-round doubles, main-draw singles action begins on Saturday (Oct. 25). Mahtani, Sugiyama, Muresan, Howard and Tatsuno will open main-draw singles action in the morning.
