FROM WALK-ONS TO LEADERS
Women's soccer seniors Katie Miler(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and Kristin Thomas(Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) are not your typical U-M captains. Both midfielders are walk-ons, receiving no financial aid through athletics. Both worked their way from obscurity to prominent roles on the varsity team under not just one but two coaches. Both were also selected as co-captains for the 2008 squad, completing a pair of long and unique journeys that led to wearing the captain's armband for the Maize and Blue.
Complete Story
WOLVERINE BITES
Goalkeepers Club -- Sophomore/freshman Kristen Keane(Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) became the third goalkeeper to start for the Wolverines this season, joining senior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and freshman Haley Kopmeyer(Troy, Mich./Lasher). Her nod made the current Wolverine netminders the third trimvurate to start and the first since 1996. The trio of Alicia Smith (1994-95), Jori Welchans (1994-96) and Jessica Jones (1995-98) minded the cage in 1995, while Welchans, Jones and Lauren Clister (1996-99) handled the starting duties in 1996.
Texas Gold -- Senior Skylar Andrews(Dallas, Texas/Plano West Senior) has moved into the top10 on the U-M minutes played list, sitting seventh amongst field players and ninth overall. The defender 4,751 minutes on the field for the Wolverines in 65 career games. The numbers for Andrews, who has made 57 starts in her career, are ever more impressive considering her minutes were limited during her junior campaign.
Emerging Offensive Threat -- As a freshman last season, Amanda Bowery(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) led the Wolverines in both goals (5) and points (12). This season, the sophomore has continued to be the Wolverines' best threat in the offensive third of the field. Bowery again leads the team in goals and points and has established new career highs in both categories with six goals and 15 points. She is also in the top10 on the U-M career list in points per game (9th, 0.77) and goals per game (10th, 0.31).
Steadily Improving -- With their win over Ohio State (Oct. 12), the Wolverines improved their season win total to four, surpassing last season's three wins. With two regular-season games to go, the Maize and Blue have already scored more goals and recorded more assists and points this season. Michigan's shot percentage of .138 this season is the third-highest shot percentage in team history and the team's shots-on-goal percentage of .442 is the best since 2005.
A League of Their Own -- With each of the top four U-M scorers this season being underclassmen, the future is looking bright for the Wolverines. Bowery, a sophomore, leads the team with 15 points followed by freshmen Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), Kelsey Rogind(Emerald Hills, Calif./St. Francis) and Natalie Horner(Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington). All but two of the nine Michigan goal scorers will return next season and the freshmen class has had a part in 14 of 19 U-M goals this season.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Indiana -- Indiana, who was pegged as the preseason No. 4 in the Big Ten, has struggled this season, winning just six games. The Hoosiers had a seven-game winless streak snapped on Sunday (Oct. 19) with a win over Illinois, their first in Big Ten play. Freshman midfielder Devon Beach and junior forward Liz Holby have each scored four goals this season to lead the team. Beach's10 points are also first for a team that has had difficulty finding the back of the net this season --IU has scored just three times in the past eight games. The Wolverines and the Hoosiers battled to a 1-1 tie last season in Ann Arbor. Despite leading the overall series 10-3-2, Michigan is winless in the last three meetings (0-2-1).
THE WEEK THAT WAS
Returning to the road for the first half of a four-game road swing, Michigan dropped a pair of conference games. The Wolverines could not overcome a three-goal first-half outburst from the Badgers, falling by a 3-1 tally to Wisconsin on Friday (Oct. 17). Senior Katie Miler(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored in the waning minutes of the game. U-M came up on the losing end of a 1-0 contest at Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 19) despite a steady showing from sophomore/freshman Kristen Keane(Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South), who made seven saves in her first collegiate start.
