LA QUINTA, Calif.--The University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a 306 final-round team score to drop six spots and close with a 908 54-hole total and a 12th-place showing today (Oct. 14) at The Prestige played at the Greg Norman Course on PGA WEST.
After finding difficult scoring conditions with a first-round 310, U-M rebounded in the second round to post a 292 after two sub-par numbers -- a two-under 70 from freshman Matt Thompson(Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS) and a one-under 71 from senior co-captain Bill Rankin(Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) -- to finish the first day in sixth place with a 602. Struggles found the Wolverines in the final round as they closed with a 306 to drop six spots in the standings at the challenging event.
Sophomore Lion Kim(Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) led U-M individually, finishing tied for 25th with a 225. After opening with a one-over 73 in the first round, he carded back-to-back 76s to tally his third top-25 finish of the season. After a slow start, senior co-captain Nick Pumford(St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles HS) rallied in the final round with a one-under 71 to give him a 227 event total and a tie for 30th individually. He opened with rounds of 79 and 77.
In his first career start, Thompson got off to a rocky start, posting an 80 in the first round, but rebounded with a two-under 70 in the second round. He closed with a 79 for a 231 total, putting him in a tie for 54th. In his fourth start of the season, junior Ross Millman(St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School) tied for 63rd at 232 (77-75-80), and Rankin closed out the Maize and Blue scoring, tying for 67th at 233 (81-71-81).
Overall, TCU (294-289-278) led from start to finish and closed with a 10-shot victory after tallying an 861 event total. Hosts UC Davis (306-280-285) and Stanford (297-292-290) placed runner-up and third at 871 and 879, respectively. TCU's John de Beer (72-70-68) and UC Davis' Nate Pistacchio (68-71-71) tied for medalist honors at 210, while UCF's David Johnson was third at 211 (76-67-68).
The Wolverines will get just under two weeks off before they close out the fall season with a trip to Greensboro, N.C., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 27-28, for the 2008 Bridgestone Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament -- hosted by UNC Greensboro -- will be played at the Forest Oaks Country Club.

Michigan Head Coach Andrew Sapp
On The Prestige... "The tournament was a tale of three rounds, two terrible ones and one solid one in the middle. Unfortunately, if you look at the scorecards, we had a lot of doubles and triples in this tournament, a lot of balls hit in the water and out of bounds. It was the worst golf we played all year, but fortunately it was not our last event. We've got to get our games back in shape, get prepared for the Greensboro tournament and move on. I definitely thought we would play better than we did this week, but unfortunately we weren't able to do so."
