ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell 4-0 to No. 23-ranked Penn State on Friday afternoon (Oct. 10) on the west practice field of the U-M Soccer Complex. It was the inaugural game held at the complex.

Danelle Underwood
Senior Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and redshirt freshman Kristen Keane (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) were busy in the cage, making five and three saves, respectively. Gates was in net for the first half before being spelled by Keane after the break.
Penn State carried the play through much of the first half, but it was Michigan who drew the first solid chance. At 15:31, freshman Natalie Horner (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) got open in space on a counterattack but was hauled down before she could get a shot off. The yellow card came out and set up a free kick for sophomore Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester). Carron tried to go to the far side, but her shot skipped into the arms of the Nittany Lions' goalkeeper.
The scoreless tie was broken at 20:40 when Penn State scored on a cross into the box to go up 1-0. Michigan generated two good chances after the goal, with sophomore Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) getting the biggest chance, taking a pass in the box and forcing the Nittany Lions to come up with a diving save. A little under 15 minutes after its first marker, PSU struck again to go up 2-0 on a shot from 15 yards out.
Michigan completely rolled over their lineup after the break, giving several players their first shakes in conference play. Before the new players could get loose, Penn State's Katie Schoepfer put two quick goals on the board at 47:54 and 51:24 to move the score to a 4-0 tally.
The best chance of the second half for the Maize and Blue came in the 61st minute when freshman Courtney Mercier (Erie, Pa./McDowell) stripped the ball in the attacking third and threaded a pass to her classmate Kelsey Rogind (Emerald Hills, Calif./St. Francis) who rifled a low shot that narrowly missed the right post as it skimmed out of bounds.
Michigan will wrap up the home slate with another conference game, welcoming Ohio State to the U-M Soccer Complex on Sunday (Oct. 12) at noon.
