ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team fell 78-64 to the No. 10 Indiana Hoosiers Tuesday (Jan. 8) in Crisler Arena. Michigan held an early lead that quickly disappeared, and strong efforts from sophomore DeShawn Sims(Detroit, Mich./Pershing HS) and freshman Manny Harris(Detroit, Mich./Redford HS) kept U-M within single digits of the Hoosiers on multiple occasions. The Hoosiers were led by forward D.J. White's double-double (21 points and 22 rebounds), which made it hard for the Michigan offense to keep pace.
Harris posted a team-high 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting along with three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Sims added 16 points on 4-of-12 shooting, including three-of-five behind the arc while grabbing five rebounds, passing out a career-best-tying four assists with three steals. Junior Jevohn Shepherd(Toronto, Ontario, Canada/West Hill Collegiate) tallied a career-high-tying 10 points and a career-high-tying six rebounds off the bench.
Harris and Sims kept the Wolverines in the game in the first half, combining for 23 of Michigan's 31 points. A pair of buckets by Harris trimmed the IU lead to 10-7 in the game's opening minutes and Sims accounted for the Wolverines' next six points. A nine-minute drought followed to build the Hoosiers lead to 29-13 until a Harris lay-up at 5:57 cut the deficit to 29-15. Harris netted the Wolverines next six points, including a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut the IU advantage to single digits, 29-20, at 4:46.
Michigan ended the first half with fireworks as Sims netted a three-pointer from beyond half court to cut the halftime deficit to 37-31. Sims tallied 12 points in the first half as Harris added 11.
Michigan's scoring offense remained the same in the second half with 12 points being put up by Sims and Harris. Sims started the second period with a three-point shot to keep the Wolverines within five points (39-34) of the Hoosiers -- the smallest deficit the Wolverines would see all half. The majority of the Michigan's points came from the free throw line as four Wolverines posted two or more points from the charity stripe.
The Wolverines take to the road Saturday (Jan. 12) to take on the Northwestern Wildcats in Welsch-Ryan Arena. Tipoff is scheduled 5:30 p.m CST on the Big Ten Network.
