MUNCIE, Ind. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over Ball State Saturday evening (Jan. 26) at the YMCA Tennis Center. The Wolverines (2-0), who opened the dual-match season with a 7-0 shutout win over Western Michigan earlier in the day, won all nine matches contested to improve to 12-0 all-time against the Cardinals.
Sophomores Matt Parks(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) made their season debut in doubles, earning an 8-2 triumph over Jorge Rodriguez and Daniel Vidal at No. 3 to give U-M the early leg up. Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) won for the fourth time in five tries this year, defeating Eduardo Pavia and Jose Perdomo by an 8-3 margin at No. 1 to clinch the first team point for Michigan.
Junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) knocked off Shaun Bussert and Joe Valle by an 8-3 count at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep and improve to 5-2.
Four Wolverines picked up their second straight singles win of the day, including Maravic, who handed Pavia a 6-3, 6-1 loss at No. 2 to provide U-M with the match-clinching point. Juniors Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) were also victorious in their first dual singles matches of the season.
The Wolverines return to action on Friday (Feb. 1) when they welcome Pepperdine to the Varsity Tennis Center for a 6 p.m. match.
