ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Friday (Sept. 21) on the U-M Soccer Field.

Senior Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) netted the game-winner in the ninth minute and added a helper on the Wolverines' second tally of the night, while senior Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) got her first goal of the season to cap off the night's scoring.

In net, junior Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and senior Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) stopped all challengers for their second combined shutout of the year. Gates made three saves in 75 minutes, while Yakel wrapped up the last 15 minutes with one save. Sophomore Amy Klippert (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) was strong in the back for the Maize and Blue, stifiling numerous RedHawk attacks before they could cross midfield into Wolverine territory.

Michigan netted the opening goal of the match in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead. Bowery carried the ball into the corner and played a low driven ball through the RedHawks box. A Wolverine attacker stepped past the ball, allowing it to reach a streaking Bohard at the penalty spot, where she slammed the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.

Bowery and Bohard connected again 14 minutes later to put the Maize and Blue up 2-0. Gates claimed a ball to stop a RedHawk attack and distributed it downfield. The 60-yard boot found the head of Bohard, who flicked it forward past the final defender on the backline. Outrunning the Miami defense, Bowery collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box after one bounce and ripped a shot past the RedHawk goalkeeper into the upper left corner.

Michigan continued to control the game in Miami territory for the majority of the first half. Before the halftime whistle had blown, the offense rattled off 17 shots, eight of which were on target. The Wolverines were not affected by the break, as they continued to command the pace of the game. Michigan maintained possession on its offensive side of the field for most of the second period.

Bowery was a force up front, scoring her second goal of the match and recording her fifth point of the game during the 63rd minute to put U-M up 3-0. Michigan played a ball along the ground toward the middle of the field where Miami's goalkeeper attempted to claim the cross but was only able to push it toward the backside of the goal. Bowery, who was in position at the far post, buried it into the open net.

Dobbyn capped the scoring surge with 20 minutes left in the match and extend the lead to 4-0. Junior Kristin Thomas (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) had possession of the ball on the right side of the pitch and gently lofted a ball past the defense into the 18-yard box. Dobbyn raced in to gather the ball before it could roll out of bounds. The forward turned and beat two oncoming defenders before striking a brilliant ball that hit lace on the far side-netting.

While the offense lit up the scoreboard, the defense held firm throughout all 90 minutes of play. The Wolverines' backline did not let the opposing team get good opportunities to score and only allowed four shots on goal during the match. The game marks the team's third shutout on the season.

The Wolverines hit the pitch again on Sunday (Sept. 23) for the final non-conference test against No. 22 Southern Cal. The game is set for noon at the U-M Soccer Field.
