Wolverines' Fall Schedule Includes Pair of Tournaments

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Head coach Carol Hutchins of the University of Michigan softball program announced the team's fall practice schedule Monday (Sept. 10). The Wolverines' slate includes two tournaments: The 13th annual Elk Rapids Collegiate Softball Tournament Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 22-23) in Elk Rapids, Mich., and the Worth Fall Classic Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28-30, in South Bend, Ind.
The four-team field at Elk Rapids consists of Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan and Central Michigan, with all four teams facing one another in a round-robin format on Saturday (Sept. 22). The first-place team from the round-robin faces the fourth-place team, while the second- and third-place squads square off in semifinal action Sunday (Sept. 23). Championship and consolation games will immediately follow the semifinals.
The Wolverines will round out fall competition at the Worth Fall Classic the following week, facing Western Michigan, Illinois-Chicago, Nebraska and host Notre Dame.
The fall tournament slate provides U-M softball fans their first opportunity to view the 2008 Wolverine lineup, including freshmen Nicole Guska (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS), Marley Powers (Owosso, Mich./Owosso HS), Dorian Shaw (Burke, Va./Robinson Second School) and Jordan Taylor (Valencia, Mich./Valencia HS) and transfer-student Megan Gregory (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS). These new faces will join a veteran U-M contingent that qualified for the program's 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional in 2007.
Among the returning Wolverines are 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American Angela Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) as well as Great Lakes All-Region first-team selections Alessandra Giampaolo (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic) and Samantha Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) and All-Big Ten performer Nikki Nemitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS).
