As the 2007-08 Michigan men's golf season rapidly approaches, a number of Wolverines are hard at work preparing to build on last year's successes. Below are the recaps of the accomplishments the U-M players have made during summer tournament play. Check back for more updates leading up to the fall.
August 20-22, 2007 --With four Michigan players among the 315 player field at 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., the quad-group of Wolverines performed well in tough and foggy conditions through 36-holes, but were unable to advance to match-play. Incoming freshman Lion Kim (74-73/147) led the group as he tied for 59th closing among a group of 17 players competing for five spots in match-play. Unfortunately, Kim did not advance ending his 2007 U.S. Amateur. The three other Wolverine scores include: senior Tim Schaetzel, tied for 108th (78-72/150); junior Bill Rankin, tied for 161st (75-78/153) and sophomore Billy McKay, tied for 266th (81-79/160). August 10-12, 2007 -- After posting round totals of 67, 74 and 71, Tim Schaetzel tied for third with a two-over 212 54-hole total at the 29th Cardinal Amateur Golf Tournament, played at the Cardinal Golf & Country Club, a McConnell Golf Property. [ Results ]
August 7, 2007 -- Using round totals of 69 and 71, Tim Schaetzel posted a 139 36-hole total and finished tied as the runner-up at his the U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier at the Standard Club in Duluth, Ga. Schaetzel, along with Lion Kim,Billy McKayand Bill Rankin, gives the Wolverines four players competing at the U.S. Amateurwhich will be contested Aug. 20-26 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. August 4, 2007 -- After opening his first 11 holes at three-under par in the final round of the 72-hole Georgia Open being played at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Ga., Tim Schaetzel slipped out of contentionover his last seven, going five-over-par during the stretch to close with a 74.To conclude his Open, Schaetzel ended up tied for 11th with a one-under 287 total (71-72-70-74). August 3, 2007 -- In the final 36 holes of the the 105th Western Amateur at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich., Brian Ottenweller posted round scores of 71 and 74 to close with a plus-eight 288 total, placing him tied for 33rd in the pretigious amateur championship. Despite the strong finish, hedid not qualify for match play.[ Final Stroke Play Results ]
At the Georgia Open being played at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Ga., Tim Schaetzel continued his strong play posting an even-par 72 putting him in a tie for 12th with a one-under 143 total allowing him to easily make the first cut. He will have play the final 36 holes Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 4-5).
August 2, 2007 -- Brian Ottenweller used a even-par 70 in the second round to place him among the top 50 players andadvancing him to the Friday's 36 holes at the 105th Western Amateur at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. Michael Slovitt and Billy McKay, who both posted 75s in the second round missed the cut and finished tied-90th and tied for 124th, respectively. [ Second Day Summary ]
In other tournament action, Tim Schaetzel opened up his play at the Georgia Open at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Ga. posting a one-under 71 putting him tied for 10th after the first day. [ Tournament Site ]
August 1, 2007 -- Michael Slovitt and Brian Ottenweller both shot 73 and are tied for 60th, and Billy McKay is tied for 134th (79) after the first round of the 105th Western Amateur at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. The 156-man field will play 18 holes each day Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a cut to the low 50 plus ties, who will play 36 holes Friday. The top 16 finishers will then move on to match-play. July 30, 2007 -- Three Wolverines were among the 38 Monday qualifiers for the prestigious Western Amateur. Brian Ottenweller tied for fourth (71) and Michael Slovitt tied for 10th (72) at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., while Billy McKay tied for 17th (74) and survived a five-man playoff for four spots at Lake Michigan Hills in Benton Harbor, Mich. July 25-26, 2007 -- Three Wolverines qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be contested Aug. 20-26 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. Incoming freshman Lion Kim was the sectional qualifier medalist July 25 at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J., shooting 138 (69-69), while Bill Rankin (67-71/138) and Billy McKay (71-68/139) were the top two qualifers July 26 at Boyne Resort's Heather Course in Harbor Springs, Mich. July 12-16, 2007 -- Three straight rounds in the 60s, including a seven-under 63 in the third round, helped Bill Rankin win the Eastern Amateur Championship at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club in Portsmouth, Va. Rankin set a tournament scoring record with his 15-under 265 (70-65-63-67) for a two-shot margin of victory. "I've had so much encouragement from my coaches and teammates," Rankin told the Virginian-Pilot. "I hope [this win] creates the belief that we can have a solid team. I just proved to myself and to my team that I can win." [Results]
July 13-15, 2007 -- Matt McLaughlin, who completed his eligibility in 2006-07, made a run at the Ann Arbor City Championship at Leslie Park Golf Course but lost a two-man playoff on the second hole. He closed with an even-par 72 to finish at 221 (73-76-72). [Results]
July 5, 2007 -- While at the North and South Amateur Championship, Bill Rankinand Brian Ottenweller competed in a hot dog eating contest with Golfweek's Asher Wildman, which was part 2 of his summer road trip series calledthe Amateur Summer: A Wildman's Road Trip Day on Golfweek.com. July 2-8, 2007 -- Bill Rankin (70-73/143) and Brian Ottenweller (70-73/143) tied for 26th in stroke-play qualifying and advanced to the second round of match play at the North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst's No. 2 course in Pinehurst, N.C. Rankin, seeded 27th for match play, defeated Michael Baird (1-up) before losing 1-up to Franklin Corpening in the second round, while No. 32 seed Ottenweller beat Matt Miller (20 holes) before falling to Andrew Dibitetto (5&4). No. 3 seed Lion Kim, who finished in a three-way tie for first in qualifying with a four-under total of 138 (70-68) but lost a playoff for medalist honors, and No. 49 seed Billy McKay (tie-47th, 73-72/145) were ousted in the first round, falling to Corpening (20 holes) and Bud Cauley (3&2), respectively. June 19-23, 2007 -- Brian Ottenweller and Billy McKay both reached the quarterfinal round of the Michigan Amateur Championship, held at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak. Ottenweller, the stroke-play medalist (69-70/139), defeated Jonathan Kalmink (3&2), Steve Larson (6&4) and Robby McNiff (4&3) before a 1-up loss to Dan Doyle in the quarterfinals. McKay, who tied for 32nd in qualifying (75-75/150) and was seeded 39th in match play, picked up wins over Michael King (2-up), Tim Katanski (2&1) and Steve McKalko (2&1) before a 5&4 loss to Ryan Brehm. No. 10 seed Bill Rankin (tie-8th, 71-74/145) and No. 47 Nick Pumford (tie-41st, 74/77/151) also qualified for match play, with Rankin beating Rob Spears (4&3) before falling to Steve McKalko (2&1) and Pumford losing to Bill Zylstra (3&1) in the first round. June 11-14, 2007 -- Bill Rankin was the top finisher of the three current Wolverines who played in the Michigan Open, held at Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City. Rankin tied for 10th with a two-under 285 (73-70-71-71). Nick Pumford (tie-96th, 73-78/151) and Billy McKay (tie-127th, 72-82/154) both missed the 36-hole cut. Scott Hayes (1998-2001) topped the Wolverine alumni in the field, placing runner-up at 276 (69-68-68-71). [Results]
June 11-15, 2007 -- Incoming freshman Lion Kim finished in three-way tie for third at the FootJoy Boy's Invitational at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Kim's three-under-par 69 in the final round gave him a seven-under total of 281 (70-71-71-69), two shots behind the winner. Fellow recruit Alexander Sitompul tied for 36th (74-72-73-70/289).
