ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team fell to the Boston College Eagles 77-64 Wednesday (Nov. 28) night in Crisler Arena. The Wolverines trailed by one at halftime, but the Eagles used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to build an insurmountable 14-point deficit. BC guard Tyrese Rice led the way for the Eagles, posting a game-high 28 points.
Freshman Manny Harris(Detroit, Mich./Redford HS) led the Wolverines with 19 points on 7-for-17 shooting, including two-for-three from beyond the arc. He added four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Sophomore DeShawn Sims(Detroit, Mich./Detroit Pershing HS) posted 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting, including two-for-four from three-point range. He also tallied six rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Harris began the game hot, netting five of Michigan's first eight points en route to an early 8-7 U-M lead. Both of Harris' field goals came on fast break lay-ups. The Wolverines then turned their focus to the outside, as three pointers by Sims and junior C.J. Lee(Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland HS) extended the Wolverine advantage to 19-15 at 9:30 in the first half. Sims was impressive in the game's first 20 minutes, scoring eight points, including a perfect two-for-two from beyond the arc.
Trailing 28-25 with more than five minutes to play in the first half, freshman Kelvin Grady(Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) took over, collecting Michigan's last eight points of the half, including a pair of three-pointers. Grady finished the half with eight points on three-for-three shooting and added two rebounds.
Entering halftime, the Wolverines trailed the Eagles, 34-33, in a highly contested first half. Each team posted 13 field goals, including five triples. BC edged U-M in the paint, outscoring the Wolverines 14-8, and the play of Rice kept Boston College afloat in the opening stanza, netting a game-leading 16 points.
Harris and Sims carried the Wolverines early in the second half, collecting eight of U-M's first 11 points of the stanza en route to a 46-46 tie at 13:48. Both teams traded baskets during the next five minutes, until a 12-0 run by the Eagles gave BC the 66-52 advantage with six minutes left in the game.
The Wolverines continued to battle on both ends of the court, as Harris posted seven of Michigan's last 12 points.
The Wolverines will now take to the road, traveling to Boston, Mass., to face Harvard on Saturday (Dec. 1). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
