
Maravic, DePietro Elected Team Co-Captains for 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head men's tennis coach Bruce Berque announced Wednesday (Nov. 14) that senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and junior Mike DePietro(Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) have been voted by their teammates as co-captains to lead the Wolverines in 2008. Maravic carries the honor for the second straight season, while DePietro holds the title for the first time in his career.
Maravic, who served as a tri-captain with Ryan Heller (2004-07) and Brian Hung (2004-07) last season, is a three-time All-Big Ten Conference selection and team Most Valuable Player. Last year he became U-M's firstIntercollegiate Tennis AssociationAll-American (with doubles partner Hung) since 1994 and the program's first Big Ten singles champion since 1996. The two-time Academic All-Big Ten team member holds career records of 70-48 in singles and 73-33 in doubles.
One of three Michigan natives on this year's roster, DePietro holds career records of 15-13 in singles and 6-6 in doubles. He was voted U-M's Most Improved Player following his freshman campaign in 2005-06, and he has been victorious in each of his dual-match singles and doubles outings. DePietro will look to continue a solid junior season after already surpassing career-best win totals in both singles (7-5) and doubles (3-1) during the fall.
The Wolverines will kick off 2008 by competing in the Duke Invitational, scheduled for Jan. 19-21 at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
