Postmatch Quotes
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team captured the 2007 Big Ten Conference Singles Championship title Monday afternoon (Nov. 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The sixth seed in the 64-player main draw, Jung posted six straight-set victories over three days to claim the program's 22nd conference singles championship. Jung's win today keeps the trophy in Ann Arbor for the second straight year, as senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) claimed the Big Ten singles crown in 2006.
The afternoon championship match saw Jung and Iowa's Bart van Monsjou battle back and forth for a majority of the first set. After Jung broke serve to go up 2-1, van Monsjou responded with two straight breaks to take a 4-2 advantage. Jung bounced back by earning two breaks of his own to regain a 5-4 edge, then held serve in the ensuing game to clinch a 6-4 win in the first set.
Jung earned another break early in the second set to go up 3-1, but van Monsjou broke back four games later to tie the score at 4-4. Each player held serve in the next four games to send the set to a tiebreaker. In the extra set, Jung snapped a 6-6 tie by winning two straight points to wrap up the title.
The morning semifinal match pitted Jung against top-seeded Maravic. Jung broke serve twice to win the first set, 6-3, and then secured a berth in the finals by breaking Maravic two more times to take the second set, 6-2.
Jung, the 124th-ranked player in the nation, finishes the fall season with an overall singles record of 8-3.
The Maize and Blue finished the three-day event with a combined record of 26-15 in main draw action.
The Big Ten Singles Championship marked Michigan's final event of the fall season. The Wolverines will kick off 2008 by competing in the Duke Invitational, scheduled for Jan. 19-21 at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
