In three tournaments this season, Michigan has posted two top-two finishes. U-M won Purdue's Midwest Shootout (Sept. 8) and posted a runner-up finish at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate (Sept. 22-23). The Maize and Blue have also produced three medalist honors. Tim Schaetzel and Bill Rankin shared the top spot at the Midwest Shootout with three other players, while Nick Pumford -- playing as an individual -- won his first career tournament at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate (Sept. 22-23).
With the first round one-under 283 at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, Michigan was the only team to tally a sub-par team round. Following with a two-over 286 in the second round and a 299 final round, the Maize and Blue posted a runner-up finish with an season-best 868 54-hole team total. For the season, U-M is averaging 295.71 for team rounds.
The Wolverine starters produced five par-or-better rounds in the runner-up finish at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate. Including Nick Pumford's individual play, the Maize and Blue had seven total par-or-better rounds for the weekend. Through three tournaments, the Wolverines have posted nine rounds at par or better.
With the team title at Purdue's Midwest Shootout (Sept. 8) to open the season, Michigan won its first tournament title since 2005, when the Wolverines posted a 11-shot win at their own Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25) on the U-M Golf Course. The title marks the second team title in the six-year career of head coach Andrew Sapp.
The team win at Purdue's Midwest Shootout marked 20 years since Michigan opened the season with a team victory. The last time the Wolverines posted a team win in the first tournament of the season was during the 1987-88 season, when the Maize and Blue won the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 10-11, 1987).
Playing as an invited individual at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, Nick Pumford claimed the first medalist honor of his Michigan career. He is the first U-M golfer to win a tournament since former Wolverine Christian Vozza (2004-07) won the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25).
Nick Pumford's final round four-under 67 at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate tied his career best single round tournament total. He equaled the four-under 67 he posted in the first round of the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 23-24, 2006). In addition, Pumford's three-under 210 54-hole tournament total at Wolf Run was just a stroke away from equaling his career best. He tallied a career-best of four-under 209 at the 2006 Wolverine Intercollegiate finishing as the medalist runner-up. Coincidentally, he competed as an invited individual at the Wolverine Intercollegiate.
Tim Schaetzel and Bill Rankin each won his first medalist honor at Michigan, sharing the top individual spot with three others at Purdue's Midwest Shootout. Schaetzel's previous best was a tie for third at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-17, 2006) and the Nike Purdue Kiahuna Collegiate Invitational (Nov. 22-23, 2006). Rankin's previous best tournament finish was a runner-up effort at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate (March 18-20, 2007).
Tim Schaetzel, Brian Ottenweller, Bill Rankin and Lion Kim have started all three tournaments this season for Michigan. The quad group of Wolverines have produced six of U-M's nine par or better round tallies.
