Corner Kicks: Northwestern
The Wildcats (6-5-3, 1-3-1 Big Ten) didn't take advantage of a light weekend schedule, playing to a 0-0 tie with Illinois in their lone game last weekend. Seniors Kelsey Hans and Shannon Schneeman account for 52-percent of Northwestern's offense this year. Hans, a second team All-Big Ten selection in 2006, has six goals and four helpers while Schneeman has netted seven markers. Minding the cage in her second season at NU is senior Lauren Johnston. The goalkeeper boasts a 1.39 goals-against average with three shutouts.
Stephanie Erickson, Northwestern's all-time leader in goals and points, is in her second season as the team's head coach. Michigan is 10-3-2 in the all-time series against the Wildcats. Senior Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) has two goals against Northwestern in her career. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in Evanston, Ill. Northwestern on the Internet: www.nusports.com.
Corner Kicks: Wisconsin
Wisconsin (5-6-1, 1-3-0 Big Ten) found itself on both sides of a 3-0 decision this weekend, falling to Illinois after beating Loyola-Chicago. Senior/Junior Tricia Krobach has found a niche since transferring from Purdue, putting up eight points in her first season with Wisconsin. Senior defender Terry Shannon has jump-started the offense from the backfield, posting six points on the season while senior/junior forward Taylor Walsh has three goals. Jamie Klages has started all-but-one game for the Badgers in net. The junior goalkeeper owns a 5-4-1 record with five shutouts and a 1.16 goals-against average. Paula Wilkins took over the Wisconsin womens soccer program in January 2007 after spending six years as the head coach at Penn State University.
Michigan trails in the all-time series with Wisconsin, going 7-10-2. Last season's 1-1 tie was an extremely physical match that saw 42 fouls called. The Wolverines held a 1-0 lead heading into the latter stages of the game before the Badgers got a 76th minute equalizer. Wisconsin on the Internet: www.uwbadgers.com.
The Week That Was
The Wolverines yielded a second-half goal and fell, 1-0, to Ohio State Friday (Oct. 12) in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made five saves in the effort, while Kristin Thomas (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) lead the Wolverines with three shots. Michigan suffered its second loss of the weekend, falling 2-0 at No. 10 Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 14) on Jeffrey Field. The Wolverines finished the game with a 15-14 advantage on the shot chart and put six balls on net, but Katie Schoepfer's early goal proved too much, forcing Michigan to play from behind for most of the game. The Wolverines blasted 12 shots, four on net, in the second frame but were unable to chip away at the deficit.
Leaders and Best
Through 13 games, Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) leads the Wolverine offense with 10 points. Bowery also shares the team lead in assists with Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), as each Wolverine has two helpers on the season. Melissa Dobbyn and Bowery have taken the most cracks at the net with 28 and 27 shots, respectively. Madison Gates has shouldered the load in goal, playing 1,203-plus minutes with a 1.20 goals-against average. Gates has two shutouts for the season, and played the majority of two combined-shutouts with Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica).
Dobbyn One Away From Career Shots Record
Senior Melissa Dobbyn sits one shot away from tying Abby Crumpton's (1999-2002) program record of 300. The senior forward, who has 28 strikes this season, already owns the single-season shots record. During the 2006 season, Dobbyn took 95 cracks at the net.
Dobbyn leapfrogged Ruth Poulin (1994-97) into sixth place on the U-M all-time points list. Dobbyn now has 70 career points and needs nine more to catch Jessica Limauro (1995-98), who is next on the list in fifth place with 79 career points. Crumpton holds the top spot on the list with 116 points.
Dobbyn is also near the top five in goals (26, four short of fifth place) and assists (18, one shy of fifth place) on the U-M career list.
Cottrell, Dobbyn and Kalmbach Putting In Their Time
Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central), who has started all 13 games this season, is now in 11th place on the U-M career starts list. Cottrell made her 74th start on Sunday against Penn State (Oct. 14), pushing her past Vicky Whitley (1999-2002) on the all-time list. Melissa Dobbyn tied Limauro for 14th place with her 69th career start against Iowa (Sept. 30).
Cottrell is also climbing the U-M all-time minutes played list. She jumped into third place with 6,540 minutes logged. Dobbyn is fifth with 5,929 minutes. Fifth-year senior Emily Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) moved to eighth all-time at 4,724 minutes, passing Jamie Artsis (4,676, 2004-06) this past weekend. Goalkeeper Suzie Grech (2000-03) is the career leader with 11,826 minutes, while the 7,130 minutes played by Katelin Spencer (2003-06) tops the list for field players.
