ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and sophomore Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) each scored five times in two games on Saturday (Jan. 27) to help the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team to a pair of opening-day wins at day one of the Michigan Kick-Off at Canham Natatorium. Welch scored four goals in a 12-5 win over 2006 NCAA Championship qualifier Marist in the morning contest, collecting her 50th career hat trick. Hyrne then tallied a hat trick and an assist in a 12-7 triumph over No. 20 Indiana. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Davis (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) recorded nine saves against Marist and eight versus the Hoosiers.
Welch, sophomore Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) and Hyrne each notched hat tricks to help Michigan improve to 20-4-1 all-time against the Hoosiers. Hyrne and Chatigny also added a pair of helpers, while sophomore Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) earned a career-high and team-best four steals to lead the defense.
U-M jumped on IU early, posting a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of play thanks to a pair of scores from Hyrne, and freshman Leah Robertson's (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) first career tally. Davis then saved the day, blocking a 6-on-4 Hoosier shot. However, Indiana was able to sneak one into the cage just before the end of the stanza, and the period ended 3-1.
Fifteen seconds into the second frame, freshman Terri Bukofzer (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) netted her first career marker off a pass from Chatigny to increase Michigan's lead to 4-1. Hyrne followed with a score to finish off her hat trick just before the half. Welch fed Hyrne for the counterattack goal. In the final minutes prior to halftime, IU scored three of the final four goals and U-M went into the half up 5-4.
Chatigny and senior Wesley Ellison (Portola Valley, Calif./Palo Alto) helped Michigan strike first to open the third period, as Ellison sent Chatigny away for a breakaway tally. However, the Hoosiers posted two straight scores to tie the game, earning the second on a penalty shot by Brooke Zimmerman, who found the back of the cage five times in the game.
The Wolverines dominated play from that point on, as Chatigny netted back-to-back scores to spark a 6-0 Michigan run and complete the hat trick. Robertson was next -- following a Welch goal -- as she buried two shots to open the fourth quarter, notching her first career trick. A terrific individual play by Welch set up Robertson's second marker as Welch ripped the ball away from an IU driver and found a streaking Robertson for a breakaway conversion. Hernandez finished the Wolverine scoring barrage and the Maize and Blue cruised to the 12-7 victory.
Welch's four-goal effort along with Robertson's team-high four steals led Michigan past Marist in morning action. The Wolverines -- who hit five posts in the game -- found themselves in a dog fight with the Red Foxes, heading into the half ahead 4-3.
Marist tied the score early in the third quarter, but the Maize and Blue outscored the Red Foxes 8-1 the rest of the way, including by a 5-1 margin in the fourth. Hyrne started the scoring on a 6-on-5 goal from the hole set, and Welch followed with a rocket to complete the hat trick. Hyrne then sunk her second penalty-shot attempt of the day for her second score of the game, redeeming an earlier penalty-shot miss. In the fourth period, five different Wolverines found the back of the cage, including Welch -- who connected two minutes into the final period -- for Michigan to ice the 12-5 victory.
The Wolverines return to the pool Sunday (Jan. 27) for day two of the Michigan Invitational at Canham Natatorium. Michigan is set to take on Colorado State at 11 a.m. and UC Santa Cruz at 1 p.m.
