Wolverines Trail OSU and Northwestern After First Day

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After the first day of competition, the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team trails No. 14 Ohio State 91-95, and U-M also trails eighth-ranked Northwestern 86-100, at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The action was held in short-course yards.
Sophomore Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) and freshman Charlie Houchin (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) placed first and second, respectively, in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Patton captured the victory by clocking a time of 9:12.34, setting a new pool record. Houchin touched the wall in a time of 9:14.22. Junior Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) took fourth in the event with a time of 9:18.74.
Vanderkaay won the 200-yard butterfly with an NCAA Consideration 'B' time of 1:47.63. His mark set a new pool record. Freshman Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and sophomore Curtis Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./East) finished third (1:50.10) and fourth (1:50.73), respectively, in the event.
In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Andr Schultz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) and Patton both captured NCAA 'B' times. Schultz placed second, clocking 1:46.58, while Patton was .12 seconds behind to take third (1:46.70).
The Wolverines also had a strong showing in the 200-yard freestyle, taking three of the top-five spots. Sophomore Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph) placed second (1:38.17) with Schultz closely behind in third (1:38.80). Sophomore Sal Barba (Hudson, Mass./St. Johns) took fifth with a time of 1:40.00.
Freshman Scott Spann (Austin, Texas/Westlake) took second in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of 2:00.98.
The double-dual meet continues Saturday (Jan. 27) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. Action begins at 1 p.m.
