COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan mens swimming and diving team defeated No. 14-ranked Ohio State 171-163, but fell to No. 8-ranked Northwestern 189.5-144.5 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. With the win, Michigan has defeated the Buckeyes in 39 of the past 40 meetings between the rivals. The loss to the undefeated Wildcats mark the first conference defeat the Wolverines have suffered since Jan. 29, 1999 against Indiana (106-137). The meet was held in short-course yards.
Both freshman Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleaseant) and sophomore Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph) captured NCAA Consideration 'B' times on the second day of action. Brady's 'B' time came in the 100-yard butterfly where he placed second with a time of 48.15. Savulich earned his consideration time in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking 44.60 and taking third.
One of the Wolverines' strongest events of the day was the 200-yard individual medley where they took three of the top four spots in the event. Freshman Andr Schultz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palamares) took second with a time of 1:49.64, which was .37 seconds short of a 'B' time. Touching the wall less than a second after Schultz was junior Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) in third (1:50.01) and junior Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) in fourth (1:50.41).
Sophomore Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) was also close to capturing a 'B' time. Patton took second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:26.37, which was .03 seconds from the consideration time. Freshman Charlie Houchin (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) took third in the event, clocking 4:28.69.
Freshman Scott Spann (Austin, Texas/Westlake) had another strong performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing second in the event with a time of 55.73.
The Wolverines finished the day with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Savulich, sophomore Evan Ryser (Katy, Texas/James E. Taylor), Houchin and Vanderkaay clocked 3:02.18.
Michigan will take a weeklong hiatus before returning to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Championships on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 15-17 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
