ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored her first career goal on her birthday to lift the University of Michigan women's soccer team over Loyola Marymount, 1-0, Friday night (Sept. 15) at the U-M Soccer Field.
Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) made one save to backstop the Wolverines to their fourth win of the 2006 campaign, all of which have come in shutout fashion. Bohard's tally came on her first career attempt on goal.
U-M created the first scoring opportunity in the 10th minute when Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) sent a header from the middle of the goal box wide left. Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) set up the next chance in the 30th minute. Coffman's cross was bobbled by Loyola Marymount goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek. The ball squirted to Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), who rocketed a shot toward the wide-open net that Slovek had vacated, but her attempt narrowly missed the goal mouth.
Michigan finally solved Slovek at 39:41. Dobbyn raced down the right flank and sent a long feed toward the goal that Slovek could not handle. The rebound came out to Bohard, who had substituted into the game in the previous minute, and the junior placed a shot into the open net for her first career tally to put the Wolverines up 1-0. U-M finished the half with a 6-4 edge in shots.
The Wolverines produced the first scoring chance of the second stanza in the 59th minute. Banco flicked a through ball to a streaking Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern), who took three touches and from 12 yards out fired a shot that was blocked by the LMU defense.
Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) nearly added to the lead with 17 minutes remaining. Dobbyn sent a cross from the right side to Artsis on the back post inches from the goal line, but her deflection fell right into Slovek's arms.
LMU stepped up the pressure in the back half of the second period, forcing Michigan to take fouls and defend counterattacks. The Lions' best opportunity came on a restart kick from beyond the 18-yard box that sailed just over the crossbar in the waning minutes.
The Wolverines next face No. 1-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday (Sept. 17) at 1 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field. The game will be broadcast live on Comcast Local.
