Schaetzel Qualifies for the U.S. Amateur Championship

DULUTH, Ga. -- University of Michigan men's golfer Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) has earned a qualifying spot to compete at the 106th U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held Monday through Sunday, Aug. 21-27, at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Schaetzel used a four-under-par total of 140 for 36 holes to finish tied for second at his sectional qualifier July 31-Aug. 1 at the Standard Club in Duluth, Ga. After opening with a one-under 71, he followed with a 69 to earn one of the sectional's five qualifying spots for the Amateur Championship.
The U.S. Amateur, the oldest USGA championship, was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. The event, which has no age restriction, is open to those with a handicap index of 2.4 or lower. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
