BEIJING, China -- Sophomore-to-be Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team took third place in 100-meter hurdles today (Friday, Aug. 18) while representing the United States at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships.
Ofili clocked in at 13.37, equaling her U-M best, and finished just 0.03 seconds behind second-place finisher Christina Vukicevic of Norway (13.34) and 0.04 seconds behind gold medal winner Yekaterina Shtepa of Russia (13.33).
Ofili's bronze medal moved the United States to second place in total medals earned (seven), behind Kenya's eight. The United States' point total puts the Red, White and Blue in sixth place overall after four days of competition, with one gold, four silver and two bronze medals.
Ofili earned a berth in the World Junior Championships by taking home the USA junior title in the 100m hurdles at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in June. She won the 100m hurdles title with a career-best time of 13.15, beating out her nearest competition by 0.23 seconds and smashing the previous meet record (13.22). Had it been a collegiate meet Ofili's performance would have broken by 0.22 seconds her own Michigan outdoor record (13.37), which she set at the Big Ten Championships in her freshman season.
Ofili was the first hurdler to represent Michigan at the meet, which featured a record 182 nations.
