Wilson Extends Shutout Streak With Win Over Indiana

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 12th-ranked University of Michigan softball team blanked the Indiana Hoosiers 4-0 Saturday (April 8) with junior pitcher Lorilyn Wilson (Salem, Ore./Sprague) picking up her 10th win of the season, striking out 11 and extending her shutout streak to 42.1 consecutive innings.
The Wolverines recorded seven hits on the day, with junior Rebekah Milian (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) going 2-for-4 on the day to lead all batters and adding a run.
The second inning began with a senior Stephanie Bercaw (Wooster, Ohio/Hillsdale) walk followed by her seventh stolen base of the season. Milian advanced Bercaw to third on a one-out single to the pitcher and then stole second to put two Wolverines in scoring position. Freshman Teddi Ewing's (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) sacrifice fly to leftfield scored Bercaw to make it 1-0. As the Hoosiers took to the sticks, Wilson held off her opponents, striking out two Indiana batters to keep the Michigan ahead.
Michigan began the fifth at the top of the order and pounced on the Indiana defense. Senior Tiffany Haas (North Tustin, Calif/Foothill) and sophomore Samantha Findlay (Lockport, Ill./Lockport East) both walked and advanced a base on a passed ball to set the table for senior Becky Marx (St. Joseph, Mich./Lakeshore), who ripped a one-out single to shallow center to score Haas and Findlay for a 3-0 lead.
Milian started off the sixth inning and reached first base on an error by Hoosier shortstop Stephanie Pellerito. After Ewing advanced Milian on a sacrifice bunt and Haas flew out to centerfield, sophomore Alessandra Giampaolo (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic) singled up the middle to score Milian and make it 4-0.
Wilson allowed one hit and forced three groundouts and three strikeouts over the last two innings to ice the victory for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines return to Big Ten action Sunday (April 9) when they take on the Purdue Boilermakers in a doubleheader beginning at noon. The games will be televised live on Comcast Local with Ben Holden and Jessica Beech calling all the action from Alumni Field.
