PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team dropped an 11-8 decision to No. 12 Hartwick in the final game of the Eastern Championship on Sunday (April 30) at the Smith Swim Center. Kristin Hoogenboom's (Portland, Ore./Sunset) hat trick in her final collegiate game was not enough to overcome Hartwick's six-goal second period.
Hartwick tallied the first marker of the game at 2:43, but Michigan responded on a 6-on-5 goal from Hoogenboom. Carly Strub (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) sent a pass to Hoogenboom right of the cage and Hoogenboom buried the shot to tie it at 1-1. The score remained tied heading into the second.
Hartwick converted a power-play attempt early in the second frame, but once again the Wolverines rebounded with the tying marker on the next offensive possession. Carrie Frost (Saline, Mich./Saline) fed Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) near seven meters and Hyrne ripped a shot short-side to earn the 6-on-5 marker. Hartwick grabbed the lead again in the next minute, scoring three straight times to push the score to 5-2. Following a timeout, Michigan bounced back on a tally from Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishops). Strub found Hausmann in front of the cage and the senior captain netted her chance. Two more Hartwick tallies brought the score to 7-3 at the half.
Michigan fell behind on the first possession of the third as Hartwick netted a shot from the outside to make the lead 8-3. Hoogenboom cut the lead to 8-4 seconds later on a man-advantage tally that was assisted by Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley). The Wolverines then earned two straight 6-on-5 opportunities but could not capitalize. A late goal by Welch reduced the deficit to three. Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) sent a cross-cage pass to Welch, who caught and fired the ball all in one motion into the net, and U-M entered the final period of play down 8-5.
Three Hartwick goals in the first three minutes of the fourth extend its lead to 11-5. Michigan began a comeback attempt, reeling off three straight goals. The first two came on the power play from Hernandez and Hoogenboom. Hausmann then scored her second with one minute left, but Hartwick hung on to earn a trip to the NCAA Championship.
The Wolverines finish the season with a 29-12 overall record.
