Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the contest against Washington & Jefferson ... ""The first game of a championship tournament you want to get the girls into the groove, so we pushed the counter really hard and we were successful. Kristin Hoogenboom had a handful of steals and fed the counterattack and we took some smart shots. That was a good way to get going because you always want to start the first round of a three-game championship tournament with energy and I thought we did. And I thought our defense also did a nice job."
On the contest against Mercyhurst ... "Mercyhurst beat everybody but Michigan and Indiana this season. They're playing well. They jumped on us quick on a couple of opportunities. Then we got back into what we wanted to do which was feeding two meters. We had a great number of shots out of two meters, while still working on our counter. We woke up after Mercyhurst's first two goals. You want to see that also in a second game of a tournament if you fall behind quickly, you want to come back with some more energy, and we did that. Now we have Indiana in the championship game tomorrow and it is going to be a classic battle like it always is."
On breaking two steals records against Washington & Jefferson ... "The girls take pride in it. You can ask me what the records are and I barely remember who we are playing in a week. I just concentrate on who we are playing right now. At the end of the year, I will take a look at them. The girls know when they are having a good game and they just keep feeding off of it. That second game, Shana Welch had five steals in the first quarter. Had she played more, she probably could have had more. She was just in that aggressive mode, getting to the ball quickly."
On using the offensive momentum from today in tomorrow's championship game ... "We got opportunities when we played Indiana the first two times and now it is just a matter of putting them away. I look at the number of good scoring chances we get and some games we are going to be more successful that others. Obviously, we are hoping tomorrow we carry on with what we were successful in today and that is putting the ball into the back of the net."
