Michigan Blanked by No. 8 Ohio State in Home Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 36 University of Michigan men's tennis team closed out its home schedule with a 7-0 loss to No. 8 Ohio State Sunday afternoon (April 16) on the outdoor courts at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (11-9, 5-3 Big Ten) were unable to take a set from the Buckeyes (20-1, 8-0 Big Ten), as Ohio State ran away with its sixth straight victory over the Maize and Blue.
A pair of 8-2 victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles gave Ohio State the first team point. Michigan found itself trailing by just one game, 3-2, in each match before the Buckeyes reeled off five straight games on both courts to clinch the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
The most dramatic match of the day saw U-M's No. 11-ranked doubles team of junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) battle back from a 6-3 deficit before falling in a tiebreaker to OSU's No. 2-ranked tandem of Scott Green and Ross Wilson. The Wolverine duo gained an early 3-1 advantage in the tiebreak set before Green and Wilson earned six of the last eight points to wrap up the doubles sweep for the Buckeyes. It was Hung and Maravic's first loss in seven matches and just their sixth defeat in the last 28 matches dating back to the fall season.
Ohio State went on to claim all six singles matches in straight sets to seal the team victory. The most competitive match was at No. 1, where the 49th-ranked Bryan Koniecko upset the 44th-ranked Maravic by a score of 7-5, 7-6(4).
The Wolverines close out the regular season on the road next weekend. Michigan will take on Penn State on Friday (April 21, 3 p.m.) at the Sarni Tennis Center in State College, Pa., before finishing up against Indiana on Sunday (April 23, noon) at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind.
