Erdman Leads Trio of Second-Day Winners at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team earned two NCAA Regional qualifying standards and took home three individual titles Saturday (March 25) to conclude the two-day UC Irvine Collegiate Classic at Anteater Stadium. Senior/junior Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) won the 1,500-meter run, fifth-year senior Stephanie Linz (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) took the high jump, and freshman Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington) finished first in the long jump.

Erdman and fifth-year senior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) finished 1-2 in the 1,500m with NCAA Regional qualifying times, crossing in 4:24.78 and 4:27.12, respectively. Freshman Geena Gall (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) rounded out the first section for the Wolverines with a third-place finish and a time of 4:30.46.

In the high jump Linz finished in a three-way tie for first place with a clearance of 5-7. Wade, who placed fourth in the high jump (5-5), topped the 12-person long jump field with a mark of 19-6. Freshman Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) finished third in the long jump (18-6), while freshman Casey Taylor (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) took sixth (17-9 1/2).

In addition to Feldkamp's runner-up finish in the 1,500m, the Wolverines had four other second-place efforts Saturday. Junior Chanelle Campbell (Round Rock, Texas) took second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.68, while Ofili was edged out by 0.01 for the 100-meter hurdles title as she posted a time of 14.16 for second place, two spots ahead of Kiersten Isgrigg (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon), who won the second section and finished fourth overall (14.70).

In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Joi Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) came in second place with a time of 1:03.23, with freshman Katie LaValley (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Ofili finishing third and fourth, respectively, in 1:03.61 and 1:04.31.

Taylor came in second place in the triple jump with a jump of 38-10 1/4, and senior/junior Kelly Catino (Traverse City, Mich./Central) finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing 11-5 3/4.

In the throwing events senior/junior Jamie Barbour (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford) and freshman Melissa Gurchinoff (Dollar Bay, Mich./Houghton) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in both the shot put and discus. Freshman Louise Reina (Kirkland, Wa./Juanita) made her debut in the javelin with a seventh-place throw of 111-5.

The Maize and Blue also placed third in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays with times of 47.45 and 3:46.79, respectively.

The Wolverines return to California when they travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete in the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 31-April 1) at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
