Erdman, Edwards Lead the Way at Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team posted eight NCAA regional qualifying standards along with an automatic and a provisional NCAA standard at the Stanford Invitational, held Friday and Saturday (March 31-April 1) on Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Leading the pack of Wolverines was sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) as she posted two NCAA regional qualifying times, in the 800- and 1,500-meter events. On the first day of competition Edwards took first place in the 800m ("B" sections) as she clocked in a NCAA regional qualifying career-best time of 2:07.09, shaving 0.25 seconds off her previous career-best time of 2:07.34. On day two of the meet, Edwards posted her second regional qualifying time of the meet as she took first place in the top section of the 1,500m with a time of 4:18.98.
Also pulling double duty in the 1,500- and 800-meter runs for the Maize and Blue was senior/junior captain Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac). On the first day Erdman posted her second NCAA regional qualifying time of the year in the 1,500m with a time of 4:27.59, good for second place in the "B" sections. Erdman fell 0.01 seconds short of first place behind BYU's Michelle Lindsay. On the final day of competition, the senior/junior captain took first place in the 800m (top sections) with a regional qualifying time of 2:05.17.
Continuing with day one competition, senior/junior Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) automatically qualified for nationals and placed runner-up with an career-best time of 33:09.61 in the first section of the 10,000-meter run, taking off close to two minutes from her previous best of 34:52.82.
Fifth-year senior Ana Gjesdal (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) placed runner-up in the second section of the 10,000m run with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 34:38.41 as she knocked 12 seconds off her career-best time of 34:50.42. Taking seventh place in the same section was freshman Heather Sirko (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), who posted a time of 35:17.93 in her outdoor meet debut.
On day two of the meet, the Wolverines were represented in three events and posted four NCAA regional qualifying standards. The first regional qualifying time was set in the 3,000m steeplechase by senior/junior Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) with a fifth-place time of 10:46.41.
Freshman Geena Gall (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) competed in the 800m with Erdman and finished three spots behind the captain Wolverine with a fourth-place time of 2:07.01, qualifying her for regionals.
Michigan will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Sea Ray Relays on Thursday through Saturday (April 13-15) at Tom Black Track.
