ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 15th-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team went 2-1 in day two of the Michigan Invitational on Sunday (March 19) at Canham Natatorium, giving head coach Matt Anderson his 100th and 101st career victories. U-M redeemed a morning 13-0 shutout loss to seventh-ranked San Diego State with back-to-back wins over Slippery Rock (15-6) and Cal Lutheran (14-4).
Against the SDSU Aztecs, Michigan fell behind 2-0 to start the game. Michigan nearly netted its first marker as Michelle Keeley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) had a chance in front of the net, but the shot deflected off the San Diego State goalkeeper and out of play. On the initial startup, Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) had Michigan's best chance on a rocket from the hole set, but her shot was stopped.
San Diego State took control of the game from that point to shut out the Wolverines for the first time in program history in large part due to U-M's 0-for-10 power-play performance. Kristen Davis (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) highlighted the contest for Michigan, tallying five saves and three steals.
U-M stormed out of the gates in the second game of the day to take a 5-0 lead to begin the first period. Wesley Ellison (Portola Valley, Calif./Palo Alto) started the scoring spree out of the two meter. Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) then began her hat-trick performance as she converted on a breakaway after forcing a steal. Welch netted the third U-M goal and then fed Hausmann for the fourth. Kelsey Haley (Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo) also earned herself a breakaway and connected for a goal. Welch finished up the first-period hat trick on a backhand shot to make it 6-1, and Davis' cross-pool feed to Lindsey Hitchcock (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) in the offensive zone allowed Michigan to take a 7-2 lead into the second.
Carrie Frost (Saline, Mich./Saline) fed Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) for a goal to start the period, and Kate Bizer (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) followed with a power-play tally. After a Rock goal, Carrie Stover (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Nicole Santarosa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Peninsula) scored on passes from one another to help Michigan gain an 11-3 halftime advantage.
The Rock netted three goals to begin the second half to cut the lead to 11-6, but Christine Kurdys (Portage, Mich./Portage) ended any chance of a close contest as she knocked in rebound with six seconds left in the period.
In the fourth, Bizer stole the ball and went in on a breakaway to get her second. Stover then earned a four-meter penalty shot. Her attempt was blocked, but she raced to the rebound and ripped it home. Bizer finished the scoring with her hat-trick tally on a four-meter shot and the Wolverines triumphed 15-6.
The Wolverines once again built a 5-0 lead in their final match against Cal Lutheran. Welch's goal a minute into the match ignited a five-goal run. The scoring came from Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty), who scored two counterattack markers, and Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs), who netted one. Welch also tallied her second goal in the middle of the scoring chaos on a lob shot. Keeley gave Michigan a 6-1 first-period lead with eight second remaining after Cal Lutheran's first goal seconds before.
Hernandez's 6-on-5 score was the only one of the second period. Hernandez sent a slick shot along the water into the back of the floating canvas to extend the lead to 7-1 heading into halftime.
U-M continued its scoring run with four goals to begin the second half. Welch's no-look, cross-cage shot gave her another hat trick. After Chatigny's second goal, Welch tallied her fourth of the game on a pass from Hyrne. Chatigny then completed the hat trick in the half court to make it 11-1. Keeley buried rebound to finish the third period, giving U-M a 12-2 lead heading into the final frame.
The Wolverines scored and allowed two goals in the fourth frame and took home the 14-4 victory. Chatigny notched her fourth with two minutes remaining in the game and Frost capitalized with 13 seconds left on a long pass from Hernandez, who played in the cage in the fourth period.
Michigan travels to Bloomington, Ind., next Saturday (March 25) for three games at the Fluid Five Challenge, hosted by the Indiana Hoosiers.
