Michigan Blows Out UC Santa Cruz in First Road Game

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7 University of Michigan women's water polo team defeated the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 16-3 on Friday (Feb. 10) at the East Field House Pool. Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) and Kaitlin Prijatel (North Tustin, Calif./Santa Ana) each netted four goals as eight different Wolverines scored during the contest. Prijatel also became the second Wolverine in two games to tie the program's single-game steals record with six. Michigan improved to 6-0 for the first time in the program's six-year history.
Michigan jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period, shutting out the Slugs in the beginning frame. Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) put Michigan on the board early with a goal 30 seconds in off a counterattack. Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset) made it 2-0 1:30 later with a goal from the two-meter. Welch then got her second off a rebound. Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) moved the score to 4-0 five minutes into the first, scoring the Wolverines' first power-play goal of the game. Chatigny and Prijatel added two more to end the period and give Michigan a huge lead heading into the second.
Michelle Keeley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) gave Michigan a 7-0 advantage quickly into the second, and Chatigny then scored her second of the day from the four-meter. Prijatel ended Michigan's scoring in the second with another goal to make it 9-0. The Slugs finally got on the board at the end of the half and the Wolverines went into halftime with a 9-1 lead.
Prijatel scored her third and fourth goals of the game to start the third period. Keeley netted her second of the day on a 6-on-5 from the post to push the score to 12-1 with just under two minutes remaining in the third period. Santa Cruz made it 12-2 just before the end of the period.
Sally Stone (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) relieved Kristen Davis (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) in net after Davis played the first three periods. Chatigny began the last period with two straight goals. Carrie Stover (Saline, Mich./Saline) scored next with 2:20 to go in the fourth, and Amy Cuckovich (Davis, Calif./Davis) added Michigan's final goal to give U-M a 16-2 lead before the Slugs scored a goal late.
The Wolverines head to the Stanford University campus for the Stanford Invitational this weekend (Feb. 11-12) at the Avery Aquatics Center. Tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 11) Michigan takes on No. 3 Stanford at 9 a.m. PST and will then face No. 11 San Jose State at 4 p.m. PST.
