Carr Named AFCA Regional Coach of the Year

WACO, Texas -- The American Football Coaches Association announced Tuesday (Dec. 5) that University of Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr has been named one of five 2006 Regional Coach of the Year award recipients. Carr earned the region-specific honor as the top coach in the Midwest (region 3).
This is the first time in Carr's tenure that he has earned the honor from his peers and is the ninth time that a Wolverine coach has won the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year award; Bo Schembechler won the regional award six times, and Bump Elliott did so twice.
Carr has led the Michigan Wolverines to an 11-1 overall record and a Rose Bowl berth against Southern California this season. U-M began the year ranked No. 14 by the Associated Press media poll and shot to a No. 2 ranking in every major poll during an 11-game winning streak. Michigan currently touts the nation's top-ranked rushing defense and sixth-best overall total defense in the country. The Wolverines rushing attack stands at 11th in the nation.
The Regional Coach of the Year award is decided in a vote by active members of the AFCA. Each of the 2006 regional winners will be recognized Jan. 10, 2007, at the AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Other Division I-A 2006 regional winners of the award are: Jim Grobe (Wake Forest), Houston Nutt (Arkansas), Chris Petersen (Boise State) and Bronco Mendenhall (Brigham Young).
