Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "It was a disappointing start to the game and obviously a disappointing outcome for our team. We knew MSU was a good team, but we didn't match their intensity and it certainly showed up in the first 10 minutes -- I think shots were 9-1 against. Billy Sauer kept us in the game and gave us a chance. Then we started to play better in the second period. Then a rash of penalties turned the game in a different direction. When you give up three power-play goals and a shorthanded goal it's obvious that our special teams did not match up."
On the swing in momentum between U-M's goal and its slew of penalties ... "I thought (Travis Turnbull's) goal helped us. It was a power-play goal. I think the next two chances we started to play well and keep the play in their zone. Then we took a penalty, then it was four-on-four, four-on-three and five-on-three and the game turns the other way."
On MSU's shorthanded goal by Bryan Lerg ... "Those are huge, back-breaking goals. Our power play is expecting to score and then you give up a shorthanded goal. And the timing of it in a big game makes it a game-breaker."
U-M Senior Defenseman Matt Hunwick
On how the team felt going into the game ... "I think overall we felt pretty prepared, but the jump wasn't there early. Michigan State came out and they were on us the whole first period. It took us a little while to get our legs going again from last night. Like Coach said, the second period once we did get going, the penalties and power-play goals against hurt us."
