BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Two weeks after placing runner-up at the Big Ten Championships, the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan mens cross country team finished seventh overall in the 10,000-meter NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Saturday (Nov. 11) at the Forrest Creason Golf Course in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Coming off of an injury that kept him out of the conference meet, sophomore John Black (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) led the Wolverines across the finish line, capturing 19th place with a time of 31:45.27. All-Big Ten second team honoree junior Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) followed nine seconds behind Black, taking 26th place overall (31:54.27).
Keeping Michigan in a fairly tight pack, sophomore Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) and sophomore/freshman Brandon Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash. Mercer Island) finished nearly a second apart. Williams, who earned All-Big Ten first team honors two weeks ago, finished 44th (32:19.36) while Fellows finished 45th (32:20.87).
Rounding the scoring for the Wolverines was senior/junior James Reichardt (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake), who took 68th overall with a time of 32:47.65.
Only the top two teams at the regional receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, and the Wolverines will have to wait until 7 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 12) to find out if they earn an at-large selection.
The NCAA Championships will be held Monday, Nov. 20, in Terre Haute, Ind. The 10,000-meter men's race will start around 11 a.m. at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course.
