Team Maize Squeaks by Team Blue in Intrasquad Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team held its annual intrasquad meet Saturday morning (Oct. 7) at Canham Natatorium. Despite winning four of the 10 events, Team Maize slid past Team Blue, 48-44.
Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) was the only two-event winner for the Maize squad as she touched the wall first in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.19) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.54). Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) won two events for Team Blue with times of 2:04.22 in the 200-yard individual medley and 1:05.26 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The event was scored in the following manner: first received four points, runner-up received three, third earned two, and fourth collected one.
The Blue squad opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.03) thanks to the foursome of Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), Mueller, Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant).
After Lindsey Smith won her first event (200-yard freestyle), her sister Hannah (24.08) went 1-2 with Brady (24.13) in the 50-yard freestyle. Mueller helped Blue build the lead in the next race as she beat out Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) from the Maize squad for the win in the 200-yard individual medley. Mueller timed in at 2:04.22 over Kelly's 2:04.27.
Team Maize swam back into the lead with wins from Smith in the 100-yard freestyle and Melissa Jaeger (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) in the 100-yard butterfly (57.14). Team Blue stayed close as it touched the wall first in the next three events. Brady took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.25, followed by Emily Hanson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.65), and finally Mueller in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Heading into the final event, Team Maize held a slim advantage, but as shown all morning, its depth provided key scores and the 650-yard pineapple relay was no different as Lindsey Smith anchored the 13-swimmer relay to the meet win and the case of pineapple.
Michigan opens the regular season next Saturday afternoon (Oct. 14, 1 p.m.) against Florida in a dual meet at Canham Natatorium.
